Just got the mini inReach. I can’t tell you much about the function yet but it looks great and very light. Activation was pretty straight forward.

Get familiar before first field use!

Using the mini stand alone works well. Pairing it with a smartphone and using the Earthmate app is not user intuitive, buggy and leaves a lot to be desired. I've spent close to 5 hours figuring things out and have a high tech background. Because of the small screen, needing to pair it with a phone is pretty important. Garmin needs to hire some better UI engineers to fix this (others have reported similar challenges). The mini by itself I would give it 4 stars. The Earthmate app 1 star. Weighting the two together for a total score of 3.

Everything I need!

So many great features in a small package. I love the peace of mind (so does my wife) knowing that no matter where my adventures take me, I’m not out of touch. Iridium network has world class coverage and this works great paired with my iPhone too!

Does what it’s supposed to do
on October 14, 2019

The interface on the Mini is inconvenient and not really intuitive, and unfortunately the app that should make it easier is not reliable. For example, the unit said it was connected, the phone said it wasn’t. I found the instructions for this unit to be confusing, and I incurred charges that I wasn’t expecting. But it does what I want, which is allow me to have connectivity to others when I’m in the back country.

The bluetooth connection, to save battery life only goes active when it is required to be used. It is still connected. If you had questions on use and setup please review our guides in our support center: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?productID=592606&tab=topics

Works well but check text functionality locally
on October 16, 2019

This was a gift and I really like the Freedom plan affordability which works well for occasional use. Check that the text functionality works in your country as it doesn’t in Botswana for the moment. Garmin are looking into the issue. The suspicion is that it’s the cellular providers that need to be brought on board.
Response from GarminBy Chris, Garmin, October 16, 2019
Some cellular networks in less developed countries may restrict local text use with the Inreach. In most cases emails and direct unit to unit communication will work fine . There are some countries that prohibit use of the Inreach. For more information: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=Dq3CEPZjfRAhtToGD4Yrz9

The product is very good of course being a Garmin. The tech support was very helpful and patient setting up the account. I could not be more satisfied.

Great Safety Device
on October 20, 2019
Posted by: MarkM
I bought this as a backup safety device to let my spouse know where I am. I explore remote areas on a motorcycle with sometimes very few (if any) people around and definitely no cell phone coverage. I can send preset texts (emails) and that person can click on the link and see exactly where I am. I do not use the tracking features but they are available. The "Mini" subscription was easy to setup and once you learn the devices menu, it is easy to use as well.

Garmin InReach Mini
on November 2, 2019

After 3 days I am totally blown away by the Mini. It does exactly what it claims. The Mini is really small. I have it onnected to my Garmin 935 and to my phone and both are working well. Yes it is a bit complicated so plan on spending several hours learning the ropes. With open sky the connection is a few seconds. With tree cover the gps fix seems to be the poorest connection and can take a couple of minutes. I got the Safety plan and so far it will meet my needs. With all the features the Recreation plan is tempting.
