Good tool but expensive

What they don’t tell you is there is always fees that make the service more expensive. It is a great device just hard to justify needing it!
Response from GarminBy Chris, Garmin, September 6, 2019
The usage fees can be as low as $11.95 per month and many plan types can be turned off when not in use. For more information: https://explore.garmin.com/en-US/inreach/#subscriptions

Featherweight, palm sized, great for trail running
on September 2, 2019

Have had this for around a month. I love the diminutive size & light weight. I've taken in on several trips now far from home and it has opened new doors- traditional satellite communicators are pretty bulky but you can run with this in a pocket or even in your palm.
Unfortunately it seems to have trouble locking GPS while running in the forest in the mountains. Not unexpected- that's a challenging environment- but my GPS watch has no such troubles. It really prefers to be stationary.

Great for Emergencies in Hurricane Target Florida

We were out of power and cell phone service for a week following Hurricane Irma in 2017. When paired with an iPad, the Garmin Mini is the perfect device to provide emergency communications capability when off grid - either by choice or not!

Best one yet!

This is probably one of the coolest Garman devices that I own. I love how compact it is, but it is still packed with plenty of features. I bought it as a secondary means of communication for when I’m out on the ocean.

just getting started

had it less than a month - there a lots of videos on how to use it and how to set it up - including videos from GARMIN (very helpful). Activation process halted - "server error" part way - but (truly) logging out and logging back in got me back in action - so its all good. Don't forget to download the SYNC app by clicking on the link (Duh!) in your web browser. Earthmate seems like a nice app (it tracked my on a neighborhood walk).

Get acquainted with the device - download routes
on September 14, 2019

I bought it August applied for the Freedom plan, paying by month in use. The device was recommended by a friend. The device works well. First issue was on how to use the device. Yes there is great support, but there is not a grace period for beginners. So the first week of my trip, I was able to send pre-text message, but I thought that my family did not receive them. Finally, someone in the group with Garmin explorer helped me to worked out the problem. But I lost out a week, and it stressed me out. Suggestion: give a week grace period to get acquainted with it. Second issue: download maps. I called support to help me with this task. I wanted to download the route of my trip in Mongolia, I don't know if I can see them using Google earth as I was told, because I have been working (my paying job) instead of playing with the Inreach. I am used to download the information from my runner watch with just a click. Otherwise it is fine, but I am considering to change it for the explorer, but I need to make a call again and see the pros and cons.

Very happy so far with inReach. It gives my family comfort when I hike in the backcountry solo. My only ask and maybe I'm not using it correctly is for the ability to give updates on my progress automatically
