Just received my unit, still in the early stages of learning the device! Does seem to have a little difficulty locating satellites even when in an open area and clear skies?
I bought this for a trip out of country So far - limited use but good piece of mind Got a great deal on original mini For more regular use 2 may be better Battery life could be better
I have had the in reach mini for two years now and am fairly disappointed in its performance. There has always been a several hour lag time in receiving and sending messages even with a very clear view of the sky. This year has been exceptionally worse with some messages not being sent or received at all even after doing the suggested updates. If I were to do it all over again I would look for an alternative with less or no monthly fees.

I recently used the inreach mini on a 5 day remote camping trip in mountains. The device was reliable and easy to use. It gave a lot of peace of mind to us and the family back home. Great product!
I bought this unit for a month long wilderness trip to keep in touch with family. It worked poorly for the intended purpose. There was a bit of a learning curve at first on how to operate it and it did not pair well with my android phone. I would not receive the messages on my phone unless I restarted my phone for every message. The user interface on the unit itself is very poor at best. I definitely would not rely on trying to message with the unit itself it an emergency situation. You cant even turn the unit off without first scrolling through the menu, and the battery life is way to short and needs a reliable source to recharge with. My friend had an in reach messenger and it worked much better. With technology the way it is right now I would have expected much more, especially in this price point. I was very disappointed.

I'm a big fan of Garmin who used its watches from Vivoactive to Fenix 6. I was impressed by both the device and the software infrastructure - both the phone app and the Garmin website. Inreach Mini was different: it's a wonderful tool, but I had tons of unsolved issues synchronizing my phone's now-retired Earthmate app with the "explorer" site. I can't make tracks and transfer them to the phone and the device, for example. I understand that Inreach Mini 2 uses a different infrastructure and apps, and that makes me sad. I contacted Garmin support and got no answers. It appears that they intentionally want people to move to Mini 2.
