Elk Hunters Lifeline
on November 10, 2023

The Garmin inReach Mini proved itself as an invaluable companion during my recent elk hunt high in the Rockies above 12,000 ft. Here's how it fared in the wild:
Pros: -Portability in the Wilderness: The inReach Mini's compact design was a game-changer during the trek through challenging terrains. It seamlessly fit into my gear without adding bulk.
-Critical Communication: Communicating with my hunting party and loved ones was seamless, even in the remote elk country where cell signals fade away. The two-way messaging feature offered a lifeline to loved ones back home.
-SOS Button for Peace of Mind: Knowing that I had a direct line to emergency services with the touch of a button provided a level of security that's priceless when navigating unfamiliar, rugged landscapes.
-Offline Maps for Precision: The ability to download detailed maps proved crucial when tracking elk in areas with no cell coverage. It significantly enhanced my navigation capabilities, helping me stay on course.
Cons: -None that I experienced in my usage so far. It has stood up to my needs and expectations.
Conclusion: For anyone stepping off on an elk hunt in the mountains, the Garmin inReach Mini is more than a gadget - it's a reliable lifeline. Its portability, communication capabilities, and safety features make it an essential tool for those seeking adventure in the wild. Highly recommended for elk hunters looking to stay connected and secure in the vast expanses of the mountains.
Bought this a mónths ago for hunting trip in mtns of WV where little cell service exist, so I would have some form of communication in case of emergency or simple communications between friends also hunting in nearby mtns.
The device performed poorly or not at all in remote areas despite clear open views of sky.
I will be returning it upon the completion of my trip once home

Not user friendly. Takes hours to get a satellite connection. This is with a clear view to the sky.

I have a hunting buddy that had the inreach mini and after seeing all the great features I had to have one for myself. The unit gives my wife peace of mind while I travel into the back country to hunt
Ive taken my Garmin on all my big trips into the mountains. The number one thing for me is peace of mind. Knowing I can get help whenever, is a big thing for me and my family. I also like that I can access topo maps offline while I'm using this device, as well as send messages to my family if need be. Ive actually used both of those features a number of times. My family also appreciates that they can track me while I'm going for an objective or just going on a simple backpacking trip. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who goes on bigger trips, or who does any sort of dangerous activity in the mountains.
You have to use a website to sign up while at the same time being outside with an UNobstructed view of the sky. In total I've spent nearly 2hrs hours trying to set it up and get it to work. It wouldn't connect in my backyard and finally had to walk out to the street in front of my house for it to connect to a satellite. The interface is confusing and not intuitive at all. I was eventually able to send a successful test message and a text to my wife, but I can't imagine trying to use this in an emergency or if I've been injured in the woods. If where you hike, ride motorcycles or anything else outdoors is in the desert, on a beach or wide open prairies it might be use. Don't count on it if there are any trees around.
