Great performance, but built is a bit flimsy

You're getting great performance out of the laptop. You're able to play nearly any kind of today's games. Hardware updates can be done very easy, but removing the back panel proved to be a challenge. Only one screw to remove and panel is hold into plastic pins which are fragile. When I've upgraded my HDD two pins broke and now the bottom panel is a bit loose. I think the way Dell engineers designed the bottom case wasn't a good road to go for. Because of this little things, customer will complain (especially the ones that are looking to upgrade their hardware). I'll be back with an updated review once I properly use my laptop running AutoCAD, Inventor and other design softwares.

I'm in love

I've been using it for 2 weeks, and so far its a great computer for what it's worth and the price. 256GB SSD for Booting, 1TB Hard Drive for files, 16GB Ram, 1060 Max-Q with 6GB dedicated memory, and a FHD Screen. Very nice build quality, and the Beijing Red color is amazing. Kind of a fingerprint magnet, have a damp rag ready, especially if you have your fingers on the "lid" of the pc a lot.
Software is where it kind of lacks. It's blue screened 3 times, nothing that screws over the computer, just a simple restart and done, more frustrating than anything. Wireless Driver failed on Day 2, simple fix also. Some programs have "hazy" windows, as if it was meant for a lower resolution screen, which can be fixed from what I've seen online. Other than that it's very a very speedy computer, system and program boot times are almost instant, which was very surprising when I started using this laptop, especially coming from a laptop that didn't have a dedicated SSD to boot programs and the system, and having just a lack luster laptop in general.
Gaming is where it really shines.... as long as you have it plugged in. Plugged in, the frame rates are ridiculous, on it's own battery, the 1060 Max Q seems to throttle a bit which I assume is only to preserve battery life, I try to fix it so it puts out peak performance but I don't see much of a difference, thinking its NVIDIA that prevents it from running at 100% on its own charge. Be careful where you touch the computer while using the GPU especially near the top of the keyboard, it gets VERY HOT, almost burned myself one time. I also recommend getting a cooling mat or having it on a flat surface while gaming, since the fan intakes are on the bottom of the system, so you'd want to refrain from putting it on a soft flexible surface or in your lap.
Speakers are insanely loud and clear, just placement could be better. Let's say you're listening to music or playing a game and rest your hands on the keyboard and/or start typing, your arms get in the way and it starts to sound muffled.
Battery charges insanely quickly, battery life at doing normal tasks is around 4 1/2-5 hours. Gaming, it goes down to 2 1/2- 1 1/2, depending how GPU heavy the game you're playing is.
Overall, it's an amazing computer for what its worth, and it's something I plan to keep for years to come. Even moderate level gamers would be happy with this computer and how it performs. It has its quirks and issues, but nothing is perfect.

Almost Perfect, but not spot-on.

The Dell G5 5587 is a fantastic device all around. I expect that it should last me the next couple of years and function perfect. Here are a few things that kind of annoy me. Air intake is limited when on a flat surface, so I will have to elevate the rear of the computer when doing resource-intensive tasks, like gaming. The keyboard and trackpad is shifted to the left and can be obnoxious. The bezels are also quite large, meaning that finding an appropriate backpack or case for this thing may be a challenge. Other than that, this a fantastic gizmo that most anyone would enjoy.

Awesome gaming laptop for the price. It does get kinda hot though (when playing games such as battlefield 1 on high settings), and the fans are loud. The red keys are a little hard to see, but the backlit keyboard is pretty cool! This laptop also has amazing speakers.

It is a little heavy and thicker, but it does have need due to the NVIDIA Discrete graphics card. You can hear the fan when it is working, but it's quieter than a lot of other fans. First thing I did was perform a quick benchmark test, and got high scores for gaming, web, and workstation. I am using this for gaming but also to do some light 3D game design work. So far I have tried 3DS Max and seems to run fairly smooth, however, I haven't did extensive testing yet. I have used Unity and CryEngine3 and both load well.

The laptop's performance is really cool. But one thing I can't stand is it freezes from time to time and I have to close and open back the laptop again to make it respond

Nice introduction to gaming

I'm not an avid gamer and the laptop I have been using for the last several years has been sufficient, until my grandson came over on thanksgiving and wanted to play Roblox. My old integrated graphics controller had a hard time keeping up with the blocky game and made the game unplayable. I decided it was time to upgrade. The G5 was inexpensive. Windows made it easy to transfer all my data over to the new G5. The hybrid hard drive with cache makes it simple and I don't need to decide if I want a file or program on the HDD or on an SSD. I was surprised to learn that the G5 also uses integrated graphics controller for almost everything except when it needs to use the GEFORCE GTX and it automatically switches and handles it seamlessly. I'm very happy with its speed. My grandson can now play all the games he likes to when he comes over. Things I don't like about it... I assumed the large grill on the front was an air intake, it is not. The air intake is on the bottom of the laptop and is completely blocked unless your computer is on a hard flat surface which mine almost never is. I'm also having a hard time adjusting to how I have to place my hands on the G5. I use the trackpad with both hands but primarily with my left hand and the position I've become accustomed to with previous laptops puts the sharp front corner of the laptop right into my lower palm, a little painful after a while. I think eventually I'll get used to different hand placement. Overall, I'm happy with it so far and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to spend an arm and a leg to play a few games every now and then.
