GRAY BASEPLATE
on March 19, 2016
Posted by: wyo714x
The baseplate is flimsier than I had expected. I feel that it should be at as thick as one of the larger flat pieces to better hold what is built in it. It would also be nice being thicker to be able to have the holes on the back to be usable to make a thicker base for appearances. Also to be able to link the baseplates together to make an even larger base for the kits with larger foot prints. for example, my Robie House model is too long for the largest baseplate - I will need two of them to hold the model. With thicker baseplates and using part #4211390 to make a sturdy sandwich base and the parts(similar to #4211387) that have holes and with the parts #4514553(as an example) to join them together like the city blocks would make the baseplate more usable. I think these baseplates are a good start toward an even better product that will help enhance the fun of Lego building.

I am really sorry for the confusion but I am glad that you are aware of the other options The LEGO Group has to offer. Baseplates are designed to be the "base" of the model and to be used on a flat surface. These can be set up side by side so you can create a large table or play experience using the different colors that these come in.
What I believe you are looking for are plates rather than baseplates. Plates offer the ability to be used throughout your build and are not subject to being used for the base of your set. If you need assistance finding out what color and size options we have please contact LEGO Consumer Services and one of our helpful Advisors would be excited to tackle this challenge with you.

Colorwise

I am building a Lego table for my grandkids and am disappointed this plate only comes in one color. A variety of colors would be desirable. Especially green.

This large size 48x48 stud base plate does only come in grey, however a smaller sized base plate of 32x32 studs is available as well. We make them in green and "brick yellow," which is a beige or tan color. You can find the others by looking under the "Classic" section on our Shop website. A wider color variety would be great, though! I've passed this feedback along to our designers.

48x48 Gray Lego Baseplate Review
on March 5, 2017

Overall, this Lego baseplate is pretty good. There is just one drawback. The Lego baseplate is not designed to move around. If you have a creation on it, it may bend if you move it. This is because this Lego baseplate and all Lego baseplates are thinner than a single plate.
However, this Lego baseplate is at the largest size of all Lego baseplates. This means you can build a larger creation in a single Lego baseplate than a 32x32 Lego baseplate.
Buying this Lego baseplate is mostly likely recommended.

Good if you need it

I collect the Lego mini-figures. Bought a baseplate (grey) to have them in one group. Putting them along the edge was acceptable for most of them, but there were many that did not fit as easily as others, hard to put some of them on the plate because their accessories would become undone from the figure easily. I did display them in ice cube trays until I got to many, and another way was putting them on rulers and then sticking the ruler to the closet and door frame which was cute until I got to many and ran out of frame space. The base is a good place but not perfect.

I bought the Gray Baseplate Lego for its size, which I understood to be suitable for putting on my Lego Speed Champions. I'm 5 at the moment. They did very well! There is enough room for 3 Lego Speed Champions. Good build quality. I recommend.

Not even a real plate
on July 11, 2016

It's thin compared to normal plate pieces, so putting a plate piece next to it and connecting with another brick or piece usually doesn't work very well.
Kind of monotone. I wish these at least were offered in other colors at this size, or a mix of colors on one base.
To me, it basically provides only one function: an anchor to put a building onto.

I'm really sorry to hear that you aren't happy with your new base plate. Base plates are designed to be slightly different than regular plates, that's why they are slightly thinner. While you are correct, the grey color is a bit dull, we feel the focus should be on your amazing LEGO creations, not the plate it rests on. We do have a few more colors in our extended parts inventory, please give our customer service department a call for more details!
Nevertheless your comments are important so we will be more than happy to forward your comments on to the team in charge of that area.

Super-Flimsy!

I bought four of these for my daughter for all her Friends sets (She has 59!). But she no sooner took them out of the package and they began to warp and curl up. They will not lay flat unless she builds a rather heavy element on them. I've designed a couple architectural models, but I'm afraid to buy this baseplate for fear it will do the same, even though it is the size I need. Hey Lego, for the price, how about making the plates heavier? Legos aren't just for kids anymore, and I'd like to get my money's worth. Thanks!

Thanks for your review.
I'm sorry to hear you had some trouble with the baseplate. It shouldn't be curling like that - any chance it got close to a radiator or other heat source?
