Worth waiting for

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am 69, live in a manufactured home. I have had to replace all fixtures, appliances, etc, because they use the cheapest when manufacturing to keep cost down. So I have slowly saved to upgrade as I can. One point was having to use counter space for a microwave and the cheep vent hood. I knew this thin microwave was my only solution. I waited and saved. Finally I got it. Installed it myself, and everything turned out great. I have it vented to the outside and could not be happier. I included a photo, not a fancy place, but to show you take time you can you make it home.

Looks Great, But...

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a beautiful looking microwave. It has a nice interior coating that makes cleaning easier, and the stainless steel filters are way better than the steel-cleaning pad style. On the downside, those filters began to show rust spots within just a few months! Very disturbing. But my biggest complaint is that a very large amount of vented air blows back into the house. One of the main reasons I purchased this unit was because of the 500 CFM. But if it behaves more like a 350 CFM because of some internal venting issue, well then it just isn't worth it. One other thing to consider: Because it is low profile (which is great), and the fact that there's no external control panel like you usually see, the swing distance of the door subtends a much larger arc. I completely understand that this would be the case as they are trying to both increase the distance under the appliance, and increase the amount of space inside the oven. I'm just pointing out the tradeoff. So, all in all, I love the way it looks and basically cooks, but I'm not happy with the way it vents. For this kind of money, I expected much better.

High End Appliance

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Very attractive. At a glance, when walking into the kitchen, it looks great! All we can say is,"Wow". We purchased this microwave because of the low profile and also because it included a vent fan. We also purchased because of the high reviews, and the Kitchen Aid name. Our old microwave took up too much space hanging over the stove. It is so nice to have this low profile microwave. Very innovative, Kitchen Aid. Because the Kitchen Aid microwave does not hang so low, we now have more light on the stove surface and we have a better view into the pots when we are cooking. We are not disappointed. Very good quality. We like the double lights that shine down, double filters, the hidden controls and the sleek look. This microwave is well worth the higher price. We did a back wall vent setup. Just follow the instructions on how to configure and have your buddy double check. Heavy. If installing yourself, you will need a buddy to help with the lifting. The metal plate that is attached to the wall to hold the microwave is also the template for where to locate the screw holes in the upper cabinets and where to drill the hole for the cord to go into the upper cabinet. Keep this in mind and do not attach the metal plate to the wall until you use it first as the template. We like this microwave and the quality so well that we are now looking for a Kitchen Aid refrigerator. One good appliance leads to another.

Great Concept, poor QC, Poor Customer Service

This is a great item if you want more room over the range. It would be five star, except for one thing. The grease filters were not included in the package as specified in the instructions. Given that this microwave has only been out for around a year, and the filters are backordered until Feb 5, there must have been alot of them that went out incomplete. The charcoal filters for a recirculating installation were present, just not the grease filters for a vented installation. This means whomever packed it paid no attention, or didn't care, or management knew they were out of stock and made an executive decision to ship anyway, possibly to meet an MBO or KPI for a bonus. Either way, it is a massive fail, and not what I would expect for a premium product. This is an $850 dollar microwave. You should deliver when charging a premium price, cuz guess what? People that can afford expensive items, are pretty unforgiving of incompetence.

Did not last long

After only 15 months it suddenly started a loud screech noise with each use (not from turning tray); possibly bearings of an internal motor or magnetron. I am getting it serviced to find out what is the problem but I am disheartened that in 15 months, an item of this price needs repair.

Love / HATE this Microwave
on July 11, 2021

First the Love:
We purchased the KitchenAid Low Profile Microwave Hood Combination version because of its size. Whirlpool is the lower end version of this unit but the aesthetics of the KitchenAid is more appealing. The unit is almost 7.5 inches smaller in height and ~2 inches deeper than the standard microwave it replaced. It gives us a better view of the range when cooking and the light is bright enough when you need to cook. When using the hood fan, it is quiet and moves an acceptable amount of air off the range. The microwave is also quieter than our old one and you can barely notice it running when the hood fan is on. The unit was easy to install, any do-it yourselfer should have no problem but you will need 2 people to help when hooking it to the wall.
Now the HATE:
As I said the microwave is quiet, almost too quiet. The instructions on programing the unit are very lame. When going through the setup I wanted to set the volume, sound / beeps, the keypad makes to loud, it has 3 settings, well forget it. The only time you can hear a beeps is when the room is completely silent, you have super human hearing, or the hearing of a K9! At first I thought the unit was faulty so I went back to the appliance store to see if their KitchenAid and Whirlpool on display were any different, well they weren’t. Even the sales personal were surprised. You will have to focus on the display to verify that the buttons pressed are working. Additionally you will not be able tell when the unit has finished microwaving, especially if you are cooking with the hood fan running. There is no BEEP, or a noticeable sound, you need to pay attention to when the microwave finishes cooking. I use an external timer to remind me to check the microwave when I am cooking.
In conclusion:
I like the unit and will keep it. It fits nicely, works well as a range hood and microwaves food evenly (it is a 1000 watt not an 1100 watt one like most over the range microwaves). I would have given it 5 STARS BUT the lack of volume from the buttons and when it is finished cooking is frustrating! This interface design should never have made it out of R&D and the engineer along with the product/project manager should be FIRED! (that’s just my opinion).
It would be a good Idea for someone in development to take a look into the design and make the sound on newer units more audible! Remember as people get older hearing gets weaker.
I would recommend this to a friend!
