This was because I did not connect it properly; I did not use one of the cables included. Luis from HP Technical Support in New Mexico walked me through each step and determined that I needed to utilize an additional cable to the HDMI that I had used. Luis was VERY helpful and patient!!

But I wanted a fairly decent quality second display since I have hopes that the current use will be temporary. I am not a gamer but I do like to stream video content. The quality is not quite as good as my iMac but I have no complaints. I am waiting for the better cable I ordered (mini displayport to displayport) to arrive which I believe make the quality even better as I am now connecting through the VGA port. I've had good experience with HP support in the past so I chose HP now for that same reason. Time will tell if I made the right choice.
