Pretty good, but could be better

This is my first portable AC unit so I don't have a lot of experience with these. I can't have window units in my apartment due to the lease, and its probably liability risk. So far I like it pretty well. It cools down my 12x15 (+2 large closets) bedroom in minutes instead of hours. I took it out of the box to try out and I had it pretty much fully installed before I knew it. So setup is easy. It cools the room which is pretty much what I wanted it to do. My room does smell like a hotel now. I was worried about noise from the outside, but even with the unit off outside noise is the same. With the unit on, I hear less outside noise. Its quiet enough I could sleep with it on easily. I did wake up with the power flickered during a storm because it beeps and goes through a cycle.
The issue that could have made it better is: this unit only has the hot exhaust to the outside. Any air flowing over the hose is going to get warmed up and defeat your cooling. Nothing you can do about that. The unit also pulls air from in the room to blow outside. That means you are pulling hot air in from other rooms or cracks. I think this unit would be much more efficient if it had both an air intake and exhaust. Because if ambient temp is more than 20-25 of your set point, it gets harder and harder to reach your setmpoint. You are drawing in to much hot air that gets mixed with your cool air. It also makes the unit run almost constantly.
I was hoping to see a drop in my electric bill because I was only cooling 1 bedroom instead of my 700 sqft apartment. So far its about the same. But I think I have this unit set to much cooler than my apartment AC ever was, not that it would be able to reach the lower temp half the summer. I think I also have been running my electronics more since I'm more comfortable sitting in front of them. Basically, I use them more because the room doesn't heat up to uncomfortable temps when they are on.
So to sum up: I am more comfortable but I'm not saving money with this unit.
Pros: easy to use

Cools well until design flaws catch up.

Purchased model LP1213GXR last year and it worked fine last summer and most of Purchased model LP1213GXR last year and it worked fine last summer and most of this summer. Towards the end of a very humid summer it started blowing out water from under the top squirrel fan while water collection tray in the bottom never filled up. I assumed that there was a blockage somewhere that prevented the water from dripping down. Once I pulled the cover I discovered the problem. Under the top squirrel fan was a plastic tray with 2 small holes tight against the lower coil. The holes are so tight to the oil that the opening is effectively cut in half. Probably worked great in the nice clean development lab but in the real world of dust, pollen , black lab hair etc. the little holes eventually got plugged up so the water collected under the squirrel fan. I took everything apart to clean out the holes and saw 2 other little holes on the other side of a partition in the plastic tray under the squirrel fan. I loosened up the plastic tray and carefully drilled the 4 holes to 5/16", drilled an opening in the little partition, and added another hole to the side in case the larger holes clog up. The final adjustment was to replace some open celled foam used to seal around the return air opening. The foam trapped water and whatever appeared to be getting moldy do I replaced it with a closed cell vinyl weather stripping.
So far so good. No water spraying and the bottom tray in collecting water.
A final note. I suddenly realized that this unit uses inside air in for cooling. So hot air is being pulled into the room to replace the air blown outside. I'll rig up a double hose rig for next year.
Pros: Performance, easy to use

A summer SOHO lifesaver...
on July 10, 2013

My home office has several servers and computers running full time, so it tends to get uncomfortable during summer months. While I was initially put off by poor reviews of other portable units, I heard good things about the LG and took the plunge.
Very glad I did. The LP1213GXR easily and quietly cools the 525 sq. ft main office and 200 sq. ft entryway running in economy mode. The included venting attachments made it easy to vent out a 48" sliding window, so installation was a breeze.
For the price, I was really not expecting this level of performance. I couldn't be happier.

Revised Review
on August 12, 2013

Sorry to report that my initial favorable review must be revised.
Unit worked flawlessly, in very high temps and humidity. Then, after about 7 weeks, the water tank needed to be emptied several times a day.
Service tech, sent by LG, replaced water tank float and computer board. Shortly thereafter, water began leaking from tank and still needed to be emptied several times a day.
Returned it to the store for a refund.

3rd Summer and it's Done For

I purchased the 12k BTU LG Portable unit in 2013. It worked pretty well the first year. Last year wasn't as good and this year it's pretty much worthless. It now makes strange noises, shuts off after a few minutes, and blows warm air. The de-humidifying feature won't even work anymore. Spent close to $500 on it so I expect better quality over time. This is my 1st portable unit and have experienced greater longevity (more than 6 years) from window/casement units.
Pros: Style/Design, easy to use

Very Good AC

This AC does an excellent job of cooling our 500+ sq. ft. bedroom.
It has been running continuously, for over a month, in very humid 90 degree temps and we haven't had to empty the water tank yet.

Turned off by reviews

Don't always believe what you read I was Turned off by the reviews I had read about portable air conditioners. My brother owned one and he didn't have anything nice to say about the one he had, but he didn't have a LG I bought this air conditioner on the recommendations of someone else and my 2 years of suffering ended. If you need an air conditioner and the window kind won't work invest in this LG make sure you get more BTU than you need.
