My Book 8TB (owned 3 wks)

Quick shipping. Worked immediately after plugging in. I was concerned that I couldn't use it to backup a system image (windows 10), but discovered that this was because it wasn't formatted with NTFS. After reformatting, it worked fine. I decided to use bitlocker for encryption instead of the WD software, for ease/transparency of use with windows 10.
My only small annoyance so far is that the drive seems to spin down after only a few minutes of non-use. This means that accessing it periodically (on the order of minutes) takes more time because it needs to spin up again each time.
I bought it to replace a seagate drive which died only shortly out of warranty. I hope this drive shows itself to be more reliable.

Works, but missing the activity light

It works, but I really miss the activity light on my other external drives that Western Digital used to put on the My Book drives. My other complaint is that the utilities that came with it are not backward compatable with my old My Book drives and made them inoperable.

Works flawless for me

If you need a simple home server for streaming media files and sharing documents between users in a home network, this is just perfect. I know that there are more features such as accessing de server from the Internet but I do not need these. I use the Twonkey DLNA server which works very well with our smart TV. We are on Linux and 2 PC's are mounting this home server as an external drive for maintenance and archiving. I also like the energy saving feature which spins down the drive after some idle time. This saves energy and is preventing wearing out equipment. As I never had any problem at all I can recommend this for simple home server use.

INACCESSIBLE DATA
on June 9, 2021

I have to unplug and plug back into the computer to access files
Response from Western DigitalBy SM OLS TeamJuly 7, 2021
Hi Doug,

We are sorry to hear that the WD My Book Desktop External Hard Drive is not working as expected and thank you for bringing this concern to our attention. We understand that you need to unplug and then plug in the drive again in order to access the data from your My Book drive. This can happen when the drive stops receiving adequate power to function properly.

As part of troubleshooting, please make sure that the power adapter of your My Book drive is connected to a wall socket directly and not to any extension cord as extension cords may not be able to provide the necessary output power. If the adapter is connected to the wall socket directly, then we recommend you use a different power adapter to check if your power adapter is faulty or not.

Moreover, this can also happen when systems are working on power-saving mode or if the system settings have been changed to remove the drive when it's idle for a specific amount of time. Please check the settings of your system in order to make sure that proper settings have been selected.

We would like to follow up with you to help discover the root cause of your drive’s abnormal behavior. We suggest you contact our Support team by phone to ensure an overall good experience with Western Digital. We'd be happy to help.

Concerning ticking/clicking noises
on July 8, 2021

Purchased for a system backup. The form factor is nice, and the options to get pretty large drives is great. But, when I powered mine up, I heard these irregular clicking/ticking noises about 1 to 5 seconds apart. It could be that these are just part of the motor moving the drive arm, but the noises persisted even when I wasn't trying to read or write any files. And they sure sounded like the sort of noises that indicate there's a mechanical problem with the drive itself. I found the noises to be pretty annoying, so I returned the drive and will look elsewhere.

Hi A2245,

We are sorry to hear that the WD My Book Desktop External Hard Drive is not working as expected and thank you for bringing this concern to our attention.

Please know that the external drive makes noise during normal drive operation. The type and volume of noise are dependent on whether the is drive performing a read/write operation or idle with the heads parked. The environment where the drive is functioning may also influence noise. It is important to recognize which noises indicate trouble or normal drive operation. If the drive is not getting an uninterrupted power supply from the computer then it could cause the drive to make noise. Please refer to the WD support page to know more.

The best practice is to run diagnostics with WD Drive Utilities when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We recommend avoiding USB hubs for external hard drives and therefore connect the drive directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. Please refer to the WD support page to know more.

We would like to follow up with you to help discover the root cause of your drive’s abnormal behavior. We suggest you contact our Support team by phone to ensure an overall good experience with Western Digital. We'd be happy to help.
