My daughter picked out one of these when she was 6. We lived in the Bahamas for two years, and the sea air makes everything fall to pieces...except this bag. We've now been in CT for nearly 4 years, she's turning 12, and wanted a new bag that expresses more of who she is now (space nebula), but other than that she wanted exactly the same bag. It's huge. It's 39 litres, but she loves that she can stuff it full of books and rocks and all of the flotsam and jetsam that kids pick up and need to carry with them all the time for reasons mysterious to grownups. Her old bag is still solid. She's keeping it, just not for school. :-)

A little heavier than the Curve backpack, but also a little heavier-duty. The airflow shoulder straps are more comfortable for longer hikes, but there aren't outside mesh pockets for water bottles. The compression straps are good for when I'm not carrying a lot. No laptop/tablet section, so I use a different pack when I need to carry those, but the savings in space and weight, particularly if those have their own protective cases, is worth the tradeoff. The separate full-length compartment is good for separating and protecting papers, maps and brochures. I use mine for general shopping. If I had a student in middle school or above, I'd choose the Fatboy, and the Curve for younger students.
Pros: Comfortable, Easy To Load, Good Padding, Good Suspension, Highly Adjustable, Large Capacity

i used this backpack recently while at New York Comic-Con this year and it did the job i needed it to do. i was able to fill it up with a whole bunch of stuff no problem. i was able to carry the stuff back with me comfortably on the subway thanks to the wide and quick adjusting shoulder straps.the water bottle holder also can in handy to hold my aluminum water bottle.

I have been purchasing the Fat Boy backpack since my oldest was in First Grade. She’s 27, and I’m still buying this backpack for my youngest. (He’s 14.) The Fat Boy backpack has never let us down, and has lasted several years for each of my 6 kids. They never go out of style, and they wash beautifully. We have often handed them down to the next kiddo, and after a good wash, it looks brand new. Thank you, High Sierra for the many years of school that your back packs have joined us through. I have used them through my own college days, and will again, as soon as I get back into school.
I had this backpack for 20 years, took it every hike and air travel trip I went on. It was finally time to get a new one. The model though is made of a different material that is thinner and nylon-y; the zippers are cheaper quality (plastic) and the cool pocket that used to be at the top of the backpack to store valuables is now gone. I’ll be returning this item and looking for a more sturdy option.

I bought this backpack on 8/7/2023 and I've been using the backpack for a little more than 2 weeks and the baggage is totally ripping and by looking at the reviews I'm not the only one with this issue.
Throughout the years I've bought multiple backpacks and I've never had issues before.

We bought this same brand backpack last year and it has held up. So we decided to buy a new one this school year. It wasn't necessary, but you know how kids are. We noticed some better features on the new back pack vs. the old! We had trouble last year with the water bottle not staying in very well. This new backpack has a strap to help Secure the drink. We are only in 3rd grade, so we don't need a ton of capacity, but my daughter does have a laptop at school she has to carry around, so the technology insert came in real handy!
