the perfect speaker

I wont add too much else, as there are a few reviews for this product already, but I have to say.. 1st time hearing the audio that came out of this small speaker was amazing. Its very crisp and clear, and can get pretty loud. Great for larger rooms or at small parties. And the Bass! It wont be the most earth shattering sounds ever, but, for something this size, its very incredible and does pack some punch, any audiophiles will be pretty pleased. I personally think this will be great for some gaming nights in the garage or on the back patio. Was also easy to sync up with my Xperia tablet and Zl phone with the nfc built in, which comes in handy for movies and games on those devices.. Which I would highly recommend. To end: Im very happy with my purchase. I would love to hear what the bigger, higher end models sound like, I bet even 'bassy-er' and better, but the US $200 price tag was about as high as I wanted to go for a portable speaker. Very worth it though. -KYLE

Best of three

I bought three Bluetooth speakers at the local big box electronic store and tested them out, ultimately returning the two I didn't like and keeping the Sony SRS X5. All ~$200, I wanted the best wireless sound of the bunch, leaving other features and aesthetics out of the equation. I listened to the Bose Mini Soundlink, TDK A33, and the Sony SRS X5. In the end the Sony won out with the best sound and has the added bonus of features not included in both of the others.
This was purchased as a supplementary speaker for my home audio focusing on its portability; so, while it outed the other two for best sound balance and volume, it was never intended to replace the kind of listening done in front of a phono/receiver/speaker set-up.
The A33 is comparable in its volume output, but the sound was overly sharp with trebles too high. Bose does not measure their volume output in wattage, and the Soundlink Mini just does not match either the A33 or SRS X5 in its volume output. However, the Soundlink Mini has a much more balanced sound than the A33, and a more powerful bass. The heavier bass is ever-present, though, and can be out of place depending on the speaker use (spoken movie dialogue vs jazz music vs rock music- it isn't best for an all purposes sound). The SRS X5 is the best of both with volume and balanced sound for either watching movies on your laptop or streaming music. Additionally, the "surround sound" feature gives you at least two choices of the sound balance best for your intended use, a feature neither of the other two speakers had.
Like the A33, it also features power sharing for your phone/ mp3 player (Soundlink Mini does not), and has an Aux line-in for those that don't like Bluetooth sound lossiness. Tertiarily (and subjectively), I also like the design of the SRS X5 the most. It is a small unostentatious portable black box, minimal and effective.
One feature I would like see in the future is fade-out back lighting on the top-panel, the volume buttons can be hard to locate in low-lighting.
I purchased this great speaker from SONY web site and I am very pleased with the purchase . Very easy Bluetooth connection love the sound .Was surprised by the loud clear sound. I do recommend this little box.

Hi Levskifan, That’s what we like to hear! Thank you for giving us a perfect rating and for recommending our product.
Though this speaker is not perfect but the sound it generates are more than enough for me to get a rating of five. I got the red one with brushed aluminum on both sides. It is very portable but does have a solid feel to it. If you touch it while it is playing you can feel the power. The sound is terrific the bass is room filling. On a fairly large room, with the volume at about 15 "touches" ( from mute) of the volume control button is already plenty loud (more than that the sounds start to become muddy). If you connect the speaker to the charger the sound become more powerful. I have this speaker for a while now but but I have not encountered any problem yet. The only thing that I want this thing to have, and I think I read this from other review is the volume strength indicator. Other than that, I'm happy with my it.

Hi Jamz6566, We are so happy that the unit meet your expectations. Your feedback will be forwarded onto the proper department. Thank you very much!
Outstanding sound quality at a reasonable price. Indistinguishable from the one from the competition costing nearly twice as much. Easy to connect via Bluetooth, sufficient range for use without keeping source close. No problems after three months of frequent use, but too short to judge reliability. Solid, compact unit with big sound.

Very simply put... Wow!

i purchased this speaker today, and after having a bit of trouble getting it to turn on the first time, its now working a treat! it wouldnt turn on until i gave it a full charge, i assume this is because of the battery protection inside, baring in mind it does say to do this in the instructions! but anyway, after i got it powered on, i simply touched my phone on the top and my phone said, would you like to connect to Sony and i simply clicked yes. Done! how simple is that? i then took to soundcloud and threw everything i could at it, full volume, banging bass and it was very VERY impressive for its size! it reminds me of a baby... surely something so small cant make so much noise but turns out, it can! it also seems to have a volume limiting feature built in to stop it from distortion which as we all know is very welcome as theres nothing worse than listening to your favourite song along with distortion! the build quality is second to none, its very strong and a nice weight! it gives you the option to switch between bluetooth and a aux in, but i personally will stick with bluetooth on this one. Another nice feature is the 5V 1.5A usb charger socket on the back, plug your phone/ipod in to this baby and it will charge it on the move! cracking idea sony, but one thing i havent been able to find is the rating of the internal lithium cells, which would be handy to know becuause then you would know how long the batteries would last while also charging your phone! they just seem to give you a very vague "8 hours"... but either way, im extremely pleased with my purchase and i couldnt find any other speaker that could even begin to compete with this at this price.

Unexpected Performance! 4 year owner review.

I've had the x5 for almost 4 years now and it's been through a lot. I bring it everywhere I go. Camping, working on the farm, working in the yard, the skate park, or lesser crazy things like doing artwork at my home desk. The sound performance is one thing. The other performance I'm talking about is that I bought it when I was a mechanic at a dealership and used it for a toolbox speaker for 2 1/2 years. Not only did the sound fill the shop, it also put up with all of the airborne chemicals and oil partials that surrounded it for at least 60 hours a week. Now I'm at a better job and using it as a workshop speaker in the garage at home and it gets hit with inches of sawdust and who knows what else every week and hasn't dropped even 1% of performance. The bass is so beautiful that it has vibrated itself off my workbench more times than I'd like to adm. If you don't buy this speaker, buy the x7 that I'm so envious of!
