My daughter got this as a gift for her second birthday. It's SO much fun. Following all the birthday celebration she loves to put the cupcakes together with the candle and then sing happy birthday to anyone who is around. This toy has been HUGE hit in our house, and I think would be fun for both boys and girls.
Pros: Entertaining, Fun, Interactive

I own almost every single Melissa and Doug toy. I love them all except this one. The markers do not write well on the plastic tops of the frosted cupcakes. The markers also do not wash off skin or clothing easily. Thank goodness I have Tide! The Velcro does get worn out easily and the wooden paint looks old. Also the cupcake wrappers and tops don't really fit that tightly around the cupcakes. I've been looking for better pretend cupcakes with frosting. It has been disappointing.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Dress for the Party

I love Melissa & Doug toys and this is a terrific gift. Our Granddaughter has so enjoyed this cupcake set as have we. The only problem we had was our granddaughter dotted her new dress with the markers and I've tried many methods and just can't get it out. Any suggestions? We wrongfully assumed that the markers would be washable being that it is for a child. As soon as she touched her dress we looked for warnings or statements of how to remove but found nothing. We had no problem wiping off the icing or wooden cupcakes. It is still a wonderful toy but her dress is ruined. :(
Pros: Durable, Entertaining, Fun, Interactive, Realistic
Cons: Poor Instructions

This is an adorable and clever toy! However, the markers come off easily onto hands and clothes, yet they don't wash off hands, clothes, or the wooden part of the cupcake. Washable markers would be a huge improvement! And a plastic or silicone cupcake liner would be a lot more durable for kids. Still, definitely worth the price, and a very entertaining gift!
