OVERALL
Very satisfied owner of this TX-8270 for four years. In 2016, I had purchased a pair of TX-8020s and ordered a TX-8140 for my parents – which they still enjoy today. Like other Onkyo audio components, the TX-8270 is well maintained with firmware updates that often add features and address bug fixes one-to-two times a year (TX-8270’s latest version 1132-0000-0070-0011 from Feb., ’22). The TX-8270 was originally released circa April, ’17 and, as of this writing, it remains a currently marketed product.
CONFIGURATION
My TX-8270 is located in the MBR and, in ’20 I connected it to a pair of Polk TL1 (white, $59/ea.) and a PSW10 10” subwoofer ($109). The B channel is hardwired to a pair of Bose 151 SE Environmental outdoor speakers. In ’21 I purchased an Onkyo TX-NR696 and have it connected wireless in the LR.
FLARECONNECT™
Together, the TX-8270 and TX-NR696 combine via FlareConnect™ to deliver music to the patio and throughout the house. IDK how this technology works, but music is synched flawlessly with no echo or delays.
CONTROLLER APP
Onkyo’s software for network-connected audio devices has developed nicely over the years too. If you ever used their Remote 3 app, you’ll really appreciate the current Controller app (iOS v3.1.1+641) – also is supported on Android and Kindle. The app also supports wake-on-lan (WoL) so that I’m able to turn the unit on/off remotely. The Spotify app will turn them on remotely too.
STREAMING
While I listen to Spotify the most, Onkyo’s receivers support Amazon Music, Deezer, Pandora, Tidal, and TuneIn. If you want to stream other app-based content, my iOS tablet connects easily via AirPlay/Bluetooth.
ARC & CRC
Both units (TX-8270 and TX-NR696) are connected to flat-screen TVs via ARC and CRC (audio/video/remote-control over a single HDMI cable). I had tried ARC/CRC configurations with a couple of soundbars (Visio and Yamaha) with no luck. As it turns out, a manufacturer’s implementation of ARC and CRC can be squirrelly and, with these units, Onkyo got it right.
IMPROVEMENT OP
The only opportunity for improvement is that the Speaker A/B channel selector cannot be operated via the Controller app. The A/B selector can only be operated via the button on the unit or its remote control.
REMOTE
Regarding the remote control, I read other reviews where battery life was an issue. I have owned many different remotes from Onkyo and have not personally experienced this issue.
ON SCREEN DISPLAY
I read a review criticizing the OSD. Not sure why you would not connect these audio components to a TV. However, all features are accessible via the Controller app.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Very powerful and well balanced for music. I used it just for music, connected to the wifi in streaming with Airplay. It took me two days to configure it but at the first attempt it already worked. I listen to music using the function Pure Audio that bypasses all the video functions and the equalizer too, best option for music lovers. I would recommend it to anyone.

Really powerful receiver. It's powered floor standing speakers and bookshelf speakers in my home and it's been such a treat listening to music and watching movies when you don't have the possibility to install a surround system.
