Dedicated charging ports

I bought Guide 10 plus but first I was disappointed with it, because it didn't charge my Nokia 808 pureview. It did charge two other phones in the family though. After some searching I read about USB charging standards. It said that data wires should be shorted and Apple used different method in their USB chargers. I carefully checked voltages of Guide 10 plus and Nokias own charger. That was it. Guide uses Apples "standard" and pureview 808 didn't recognize it. I made special usb cord, that has d+ and d- wires shorted in phone end and now pureview gets charged :) So if someone is having problems with charging it might be that phone thinks it is connected to computer and it doesn't take enough current from usb.

I bought the Nomad 7 solar panel and Guide 10 Plus recharger to keep my inReach SE charged. They were advertised as a good match but while the Nomad 7 seems to be able to charge up the Guide 10 when I use the guide 10 to charge the SE unit it only increases the SE battery charge by 10%, not nearly enough to keep the SE going for an extended trip.

Worked flawlessly with the iphone 4, but...

Got this a few years ago for keeping devices charged while camping and it worked great with my iphone 4 and some other electronics. Super happy.
This summer, though, tried it with the iphone 5 (and more recently a 6), and found it never charged the phone, in spite a full day in the sun and a new set of batteries. Then noticed that the housing had melted around the LED. Either way it doesn't charge my primary device (iPhone 6) off the USB port which is my main application.
I bought this unit because of the claim that it will supply "SMART PHONE 2 Recharges" the battery pack has been supplying 1.25 charges to my iPhone 4 with phone completely shut down. Live chat with Goal Zero tech produced the following quote "It is normal for the iPhone to receive a full charge and then a small boost from the Guide 10 Plus". The web site should state that in the specs.

OK use the Nomad 20 panel to charge this guide 10 plus for a better time, also it was able to get my nokia 920 two full charges. AND then after it went to a red light, meaning the charging was not able to work the L.E.D. I would leave on for 24 hours and still it would work.. it was great to mark my tent at night... Also buy the case for it to keep the temp down cause if the item heats up, it will not charge or dis charge what so ever!!

Guide 10 Plus Dead

While I understand that this only comes with a limited warranty, I purchased a second Guide 10 Plus to keep my phones charged while on the trail. As a Scout leader, I need to have emergency access - just in case. After a year of use, Guide 10 Plus will NOT charge any battery. Once plugged in, it cycles between two green lights and one red one. I left the charger on overnight - with no changes. Having a second Guide 10 Plus, I was able to remove the batteries from the malfunctioning one, put them in the second one, and have the batteries charge. Therefore, it is not the batteries, but something is wrong with the Guide 10 Plus unit itself. If the second unit dies within the next year, I'll be looking for another company that has a longer warranty. I cannot afford to take chances with a product that only lasts one year.

Disappointed!

I pair this with a Nomad 7 and while it works very well charging AA and AAA batteries, the Guide 10 Plus will not charge my iPhone 4S, even when I only try to top up the phone battery. For example, the phone battery decreased from 90% to 88% after an hour of charging from the Guide 10 Pus powerpack! I have tried different sets of 1.2V 2000mAh batteries which are new and fully charged and I am trying to charge the phone from the powerpack, not the solar panel. Very disappointing as charging my phone was the primary reason I bought the unit.

Great piece of mind

I bought this item to take on vacation to Ireland and England last year. There were three people on the trip with a total of four cell phones, two iPads and a camera. We used the used the device a number of times to keep the cell phones charged. It does a nice jobe with the cell phones. We did use it once with the iPad. Considering the size of the battery in the iPad it takes awhile to recharge the iPad. I like this device becuase I can use it with rechargable batteries or standard AA batteries. It is a great piece of mind to always have with you. My daughter likes the size becuase she can plug in the charge and have the phone and the charger in her purse.
