Crucial real-world advantage

The biggest drawback of regular weight sets is the hassle when changing weights. In real-world practice, you end up with spare weights pushed under the bed or sofa and the dumbbells themselves aren't very attractive. The second issue with regular weights is the time necessary to change weights is a big deterrent to making a small, 5-pound adjustment. It may not seem like it, but five pounds is a significant difference between, say, 25 pounds and 30 pounds; you might be able to do 28 reps with the lighter weight and only 17 reps with the greater. That is a huge difference-you can very easily suffer joint inflammation if the weight is too great. This is what makes the SelectTech 552 such a WONDERFUL product: it is so amazingly fast to make a weight change. You just put the dumbbells back in the cradle, give all four dials a click (or just two dials if you have only one dumbbell), and you're back in business. Right now, I do arm curls a 25 pounds and do bench presses at 30 to 35 pounds. In just 15 seconds, I've made my change and am starting on my next exercise. It is an amazing product and it is very high quality. However... There is still one shortcoming: toughness to handle abuse. My son, who has been in many gyms and has seen the SelectTech 552 at some of them and noticed they were always broken. I can see why. Dumbbells are normally treated like sacks of concrete you can just drop onto the floor. The SelectTech simply isn't designed to handle the sort of abuse they would receive in a commercial gym where they are being used by gorillas. Don't get me wrong; the SelectTech is easily strong enough to handle conscientious home use. But I personally found out the hard way that you can't accidentally drop these things even ten inches onto a carpeted floor. If they land the wrong way, internal selector cams, which appear to be injected molded of high-tech, carbon fiber-filled thermoplastic, can fracture. When that happens, that particular weight will just fall off or not be selected at all. The only remedy is to replace the entire dumbbell handle; Bowflex doesn't sell individual selector cams and even if they did, the handle isn't designed to be user-serviceable. In short, I wish that Bowflex made the selector cams from metal. Notwithstanding the inability of the 552 to withstand abuse, it appears to be a durable product when used conscientiously in the long term at home. You can think of it as a Porsche: it simply isn't designed for off-road use. And its incredible ease and speed when changing weight settings makes it crucial, in my opinion, to increasing strength (bulking up for a man) without wasting your time and/or injuring yourself with improper weight settings. All regular dumbbells simply look "dumb" by comparison. The ease-of-use with the SelectTech 552 is JUST the thing needed to adhere long-term to an exercise regimen.

This is a no brainer! If you are serious about getting good complete workouts and not having to deal with switching dumbbells these are it! They are made of quality material and extremely durable. They are great for fast pace, giant sets, super sets, drop sets and other dynamic muscle building philosophies. If you on the fence just get them. The worst that could happen is that you will find that you needed them all along.
