Cool concept but misses the mark for me

Bought this product earlier this season and was very excited to get it out in the field. I have used it about a half dozen times this season so I'm still learning how to master this stove. It's not as easy to use as I thought it would be. I've learned that the wood has to be bone dry which can be difficult if you're camping somewhere where it has rained recently. I tried batoning some bought wood into small enough pieces but I learned that the bought wood from provincial parks in my area (Ontario) is too damp to use with this stove. I've found it hard to maintain a hot enough fire to charge the rechargeable battery for any amount of time. The last time I brought it out into the field, I charged the battery ahead of time by plugging it in at home and was planning on using it mostly for its battery pack. On a full charge I was only able to bring my Google Pixel 2 cellphone from 5% battery to 57% before it ran out of charge. I had the stove on heat level #3 or 4 for about 30 minutes and it hadn't charged the internal battery at all. Not sure if I got a lemon or if the performance of this unit is weak at best. Would not recommend. I would wait until they come out with the Campstove 3.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Too Cool!

I purchased the Biolite Campstove 2 both as a functional cook stove and secondarily as an emergency power source while leading guided trips both by canoe and by snowmobile in the Maine North Woods. Because I primarily use these modes of transportation—rather than backpacking, for instance—weight is not a factor for me, and I can afford to carry something that may be slightly heavier. As a professional guide, this mode of cooking also has a visual “coolness” factor that a more traditional propane (or white gas) stove does not have: cooking over an open flame with wood fuel is kind of like having a tiny bonfire inside of a metal can—another method of cooking that I’ve used in the past—with the added benefit of maintaining a power bank. Coolness IS a part of the job.
The Campstove 2 works as promised. It burns fuel at a hot enough temperature to adequately cook food. It also uses that heat to produce electricity that is stored in its own power bank. It does have some limitations—it has only one burner, and the generating power is weaker than I would prefer, but who carries a 50-mile extension cord wherever they go? These were known issues before purchase, and it would be unfair of me to complain about limitations that I understood beforehand. All in all, this is a good product that works as described.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Perfect Stove!

I love this stove! I've taken it on quite a few adventures now, and the upgraded power here is amazing. You don't have to mess with trying to find fuel when you are traveling via plane, and there's just something about cooking over a fire that feels right.
Also, saves me room/weight that I don't have to bring a separate charging system with me to the backcountry. This little stove makes any site warm, cozy, and you feel great about using it.
Way to make a great product even more awesome!

Was very surprised at how easy it was to start a fire in very windy conditions. It seemed to have no effect on this stove! Impressive.

A Perfect Example of great engineering. Simple, Elegant, Functional. In fact it's functionality is amazing. Clean efficient fire that will boil water with literally a few handfuls of twigs, after dinner it will charge your electronic device and provide camp light. Amazing. Great for Bike, canoe, car, backpacking. We love ours and used it for 3 months while bike and car camping in Portugal, since then we have purchased their base camp stove and their home power pack lighting system.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Perfect upgrade to an already great stove
on July 8, 2017

I have owned the original BioLite campstove since it was released and recently upgraded to the Campstove 2. This is a very welcome upgrade as the new model comes with an internal battery which actually gives a consistent charge to devices connected to the stove, while you are cooking or not.
The new dashboard is nice and the extra fan speeds are good addition, but it's really the battery that makes this stove such an upgrade over the previous model. And best of all they kept the stove at the same weight!

Camp Stove is Big Hit with Scouts
on August 27, 2019

This last month we had our annual Capture the Flag Campout with BSA Troop 202 in Coeur D" Alene ID. The kids run all night long and have a blast. Because of fire restrictions campfires were out of the question. We used the Campstove as our "mini" campfire to cook, roast marshmallows (it was a Scout Camp!) and to give the scouts their Pyro fix. It was awesome! My next Biolite purchase is going to be a Base Camp for Patrol cooking. That will be fun. I love Biolite stoves as they help teach the scouts about so many important things. Being envoronmentally responsible, demonstrating the burn cycles, and how technology can help this world.
I've used my Campstove now for over a year on about a dozen camping trips. I like it a lot and it works so well that I rarely take a back up gas stove. The only time I feel I need gas is when I'm cooking in or real close to a tent. I'd like to add that I do not baby my camp tools. This puppy is durable! Put it in the kettle and bag it up. Works every time. Thanks Biolite. I"m sending more customers your way.
