Don't know what's with all the great reviews

The video quality of the system is not good at all. Set to record 1080p on one camera another HD 4m (1440p) and another set to 720p. Quality on all 3 setting for each camera looks identical. The video quality is grainy and very jaggy. Can't even zoom in to see an actual face. I have one camera mounted on top of the garage and I can't even make out my own license plate number. I spent days going through the settings trying to make some sense to what I'm seeing. Adjusting everyhthing possible to improve the video quality. Clear view, balanced view, fluent view did nothing. I thought it maybe better if I just downloaded the actual video to my desktop to see the raw file would be better. But the compression ratio is to much. It still horrible.

Large hole needed for camera cables
on February 1, 2017

Be aware that a 25mm / 1 inch hole is needed to feed the RJ-45 socket from the camera cables through the mounting wall. Can be difficult and dangerous if having to drill this size hole high up on a brick wall. Really I would have thought cat-5 cabling should be easier than coax, but the cabling from the NHD-818 camera has taken a backward step. Could have designed an RJ-45 socket within the base of the camera mounting base.

Big hole needed for camera cables

Be aware that a 25mm hole is needed to feed the RJ-45 socket through the mounting surface. Swann could have put more thought into the design of the NHD-818 camera cables. Also there is a short cable from the camera with a reset button. Not ideal if you need to reset the camera mounted high up.

Big hole needed

Be aware that installation requires one to drill a 25mm/1 inch hole to get the RJ-45 socket of the camera cable through walls. This can be difficult if drilling through brick walls high up on a ladder. Not happy with the size of the RJ-45 socket on the camera, Swann could have reduced the size and made it water proof. Also no thought has been made on cable lengths of the reset button and optional power socket. These cables along with the RJ-45 socket could have made in different lengths so these cables are staggered. A reset button? This means you have to go up on a ladder and dismantle the mounted camera and drag out the cables to press the reset button. Surely one should be able to force a reset of the camera via the mouse on the NVR.

Could do better, Give it remote config and it's a winner.

I bought the NVR8-7400 as I trusted Swann to have made a good quality product. The hardware is indeed of good quality and the pictures are excellent. However the software leaves a bit to be desired, it is not possible to configure the system via the network. I was hping to put the recorder in the loft and set it up remotely. Frustratingly it can only be set up by plugging a monitor and mouse into teh box. WHY? it's a networked product, Swann could at least have added a web interface, or even VNC! Get your act together Swann, with a little thought and consideration as to the use-case you could have had a brilliant product worthy of 5 stars. Due to laziness you have lost out.

System is great, nvr is easy to setup and use, camera video quality is really good, my only gripe is the app.

Decent System

It is a good basic system, clear images & easy programming. However, there are limitations & short comings over more expensive systems.
