Simple set up; terrible sound

Arrived last night. Set it up immediately, eager to get it going (for reasons I explain below). The sound was shockingly bad - tinny and approaching distorted, both with songs played at a modest sound and with voice (podcasts). I immediately unpaired it -- which it wouldn't accept without a comment. "Bluetooth is no longer paired with [your] iPhone." And then it kept commenting, "Bluetooth is ready to pair. Bluetooth is ready to pair. Bluetooth is ready to pair."
So this is a total fail and I'm really disappointed and looking for suggestions. Here's the need I'm trying to fill:
I purchased a Soundock portable system either 9 or 10 years ago and it has served me so well. But my iPod of the same age is finally crapping out on me, and, of course, iPhones no longer can slip into that size dock nor do they have audio inputs.
What did I love about the Soundock?
That the sound packs a clear, beautiful, loud punch for such a small device. I use it in my bedroom, which is pretty spacious and doubles as my exercise room (including with an exercise bike) and man, I can blast the sound, which I love.
That it has worked with a remote - which is great particularly if I'm on the bike since it's so simply to advance songs or repeat songs of ramp up or down the sound or turn it off. I can't hold my phone while I'm exercising, and even using my Apple Watch as a remote is a total pain for those kinds of quick music adjustments during a workout. A remote is seamless and tiny and requires no effort at all.
That it's enough portable for my purposes and not so precious that I worry about bringing it outside with me. I don't have a pool; I'm not bringing it to the beach; I don't need the water resistance.
Is there a Bose product that fits the bill? From the reviews I've read here on the site, I'm now convinced that this entire line of sound link products (all three, including the higher end one for $349) suffer from the same flaws I've identified here.
One final note: I'm now in Vermont but I'm from Massachusetts. Bose was -- and maybe still is -- based in Framingham, Mass, and so one of the things I always liked about it is that I think of it as a hometown product. I worked at MIT in the early 1990s and I remember them introducing the Soundwave technology in a tent set up right in front of the main entrance. But I tried to reach out to customer support for both order issues and product questions and I got (i) an international response and then (ii) no response.
Good for Bose for having been such a successful pioneer in the sound industry. It would be nice, however, if its local network were still more readily available.

SoundLink Revolve Bluetooth® speaker

I made an awesome choice . My new Bluetooth sound speaker is the best . I love the quality sound and it was very easy to pair with my iPhone . I love how sleek it is and it fits any where. The volume is loud enough to hear through out my home at its highest volume reached. No drops with the pairing of my phone and speaker . Its just awesome it has become a must have in my home .

Another great product from Bose!

I bought this speaker to replace my Bose Soundlink Mini II, and I couldn't be happier. The sound quality is amazing, and well balanced. The other feature I love is the water proof design. I can't wait to try it out this summer while out on the boat. If you're looking for a versatile and compact speaker, I highly recommend you check out the SoundLink Revolve.
