I purchased this GPS to avoid road traffic and expected its power cable serve as traffic info receiver. That was not the case. You need a phone with data to get the traffic info. I'm disappointed so I returned the item.
I make sure my GPS map is up-to-date by using the Garmin update tool on my PC regularly. I believe the map is leverage of Google map but apparently not. In other similar device, which can lead me to the destination which are newly built residential areas, but not Garmin.
If you're looking to buy a GPS unit, I strongly, strongly recommend this unit. To my surprise and amazement, this GPS unit notifies you of all red light and speed trap cameras. And it gives you plenty of time to slow down to avoid tickets. Two warnings of hidden cameras, and your GPS unit is paid for. Christmas is coming up. Buy that lead foot something that'll keep your money in your pocket.
So, the reason I purchased this device was because I thought I lost my older GPS. I'm honestly awful at directions and I need a GPS device in my car. The Garmin Drive 51 LMT-S is even more robust than my older GPS (Nuvi 3490LMT) - details are more precise, directions are more accurately by the extra visual information in the screen, loads information faster while connecting to satellite link.
The only drawback I can think of is when I type on the screen, it's a tad bit more difficult than my 3490's screen. Maybe it's just a matter of adjusting considering it's a new type of screen from the older device? Other than that, this GPS is definitely terrific (note: please stay away from those cheap under $100 GPS you see on Amazon; their update comes only once a year, unlike official brands (Garmin, TomTom) who periodically have the utmost updates for their device's software and firmware) which includes lifetime map updates and live traffic (through the connection of an app via Bluetooth on your phone) status. I'm glad I snatched it up while it was on sale.
