Get one with a narrower base

This is a great machine. It was my 'I'm vegan and just finished a tough year, I can get a nice gift for myself' purchase. It helps me reduce food waste and achieve marvelous textures. If I have a bunch of vegetables to use up, they go in the soup pot. If I have a bunch of fruit, they go in the vitamix. I can save recipes- when my ice cream base congealed, I put in the vitamix before freezing. When my soup started turning, I blended it to use in new ways. I've been able to make healthier, tastier versions of things I already love, like frappuccinos, slushies, pesto, and of course smoothies. It's the perfect tool for making luscious cashew cream. I discovered that 'wet chopping' cuts a lot of time off my chickpea salad prep. I figured the RFID system would be great for expanding into the personal cup size in the future.
However, I truly wish I had chosen a vitamix with a narrower base (the container narrower where the blades are). As it is, it's hard to make small batches with this wider base. I have to make a double recipe of pesto because a single recipe won't blend right, even with the tamper. Bigger batches of nut butter work better than smaller batches. The normal container is easy enough to clean that I don't see a lot of value in purchasing the other container options.
Apart from my own buying choice regret, there are a lot of well-designed features. The bottom skirt of the container has a little hole so water will drain out when it's tipped upside down after washing. Putting soap and water in the container and giving it a blend does clean it pretty well. Having the blade permanently in the container is the ideal construction- less clean up, never leaks, harder to cut oneself. The motor has a good cord storage system and the rubbery top can be pulled off for thorough cleaning. The tamper is so useful in making thick stuff like 'nice cream', and has flat sides on the stopper so it doesn't roll off the counter. It's so convenient to place the container on the motor- lower end brands require a twist-to-click kind of thing.
Overall, I'm happy to be a vitamix owner. If you're looking for a new vitamix, find a refurbished restaurant model, the kind with the narrower base. Don't get caught up in all these extras.
I don’t usually leave reviews. But I must say where was this machine all my life!! I can’t say enough good things about the Vitamix. I just wish I had bought one years ago!
Pros: Programability, Speed of Service, Texture Quality, Durability, Easy to use, Versatility, Recipe Enhancement, Product features, Power
