Great Cooker but Poor Fitting Lid

This is a great cooker and I love it. It didn't take me long to get the hang of using a slow cooker. I thought initially it might be a big deal getting temperatures right but it really has been very easy, except maybe in wind.
The build quality overall is big, bold, heavy and old fashioned which is great and exactly what I want.
The only issue is the poor fit of the lid on the cooking area. The gaps of 3mm or more cannot be covered with a gasket to seal it.
I think it is just laziness in manufacture. I don't expect a precision fit but I think the fit is poor enough to call OJ out on this. I just have to accept that this does compromise performance, especially in wind. I can live with it.
I love the cooker but I think OJ can easily remedy this if they choose to.

I've been looking for a grill for a long time.
I became aware of Oklahoma's Joe on the Internet and searched for a while here in Mexico - and found it. I've never unpacked anything in my life and I knew it was forever. Now yes. An amazing quality. Many thanks from a German grill and smoker fan.

For Your Backyard, It Can't Be Beat!

This was my first smoker for the backyard and it has been an absolute champ. The smoke flavor is amazing without being overpowering. The included firebox makes fire management extremely easy. Keep it oiled occasionally, and covered between cooks and it will be problem free.

First burn in

Didnt smoke with it yet but the assembly and burn in went very well. Only thing I wish was designed differently is closer spec on smoke stack and design for securing legs and stack other than a clamp bolt design. I did use the door clamps and OK mod seals. Put the seals around both doors and between 2 halves of firebox and not between firebox and cooking chamber. Needed 2 rolls of seal ti finish but have plenty left over. Did not have any smoke leak between firebox and cook chamber without seals. Still have some leaking around doors with the seals but very minimal! My biggest piece of advice is use charcoal to burn in while following instructions. I did not have any bubbling or peeling anywhere. With chimney in traditional port and baffles out I used 1 chimney full of charcoal in the fire box and 2 in the cook chamber on the charcoal grates spaced out time wise to raise temp slowly and careful not to exceed max temp of 450 so I targeted 400 using dampers. Very happy with smoker! Temps did not swing and were rather steady. When using temp probes the temp guage (the gauge glows in the dark!!!) that came with the smoker was very close to probe reading when probe was placed at the same level.

Been wanting a reverse flow smoker for a while, finally order it. Easy assembly, also used 650 RTV to seal all the areas and lavalock smoker gaskets for the lids. I have smoked a brisket and ribs so far and they have turned out great and used half of the charcoal and wood that use to use with my old smoker. Really like the stainless fire box basket, makes it easy for cleanup and to keep from getting ash stall.

Update Highland Reverse Flow Smoker - No Mods
on July 23, 2019

Length of ownership:1 week
Posted earlier about the excellent fit and quality of my new Highland Reverse Flow Smoker. Yesterday I finally got the opportunity to season it. After reading everything I could on what others have done, I decided to use a paint brush to apply a thick coating of 100% pure Canola oil (appears thicker than spray oil). I also coated the entire outside of the smoker being sure to dap oil around all lid closure points. I also placed four Southern Living magazines under each wheel to give it a slight tilt toward the drain-end such that during the seasoning process, excess oil could easily drip from the smoker. I filled the basket nearly all the way with unlit charcoals and then added a mini-chimney of lit charcoals to the top. After closing everything up, opened the exhaust damper up all the way and the air intake damper to 1/2" open. This allowed smoker to settle in on 263 degrees for 8 hours without any deviation and another 2 hours at 210 degrees without adding coals (reminiscent of cooking with an UDS - set it and forget it smoker). Through the whole process, there was very little smoke seen escaping from the cook chamber lid (at most, a whiff every now and then), and none from the fire box (very careful to tighten bolts in a cross pattern similar to changing a car tire so as to apply equal torque gradually to all bolts and avoid any type of warpage). Today I plan to fire my smoker back up this time raising the temperature up to 300 degrees for 4 - 5 hours to further set and hardened the lacquer-like protective glaze that I now have on the inside and outside of my smoker with no paint damage. The oil around the closure points apparently helped to form a gasket to prevent leaks that would have eventually formed during cooking process over time. My smoker is totally stock and I love the way it has performed so far. I cannot wait to begin cooking in the very near future, but appear rain is forecasted for the next several days.
