NAS 18TB Red Pro - Packaged in a 10x8x4 box loose
on May 29, 2025
Posted by: AnImation
WD has always been my favorite HDD, I have not had one fail yet "Knock on Wood" My Black drives are still working great I have 10 of them in 3 different gaming PC going back to 2014. started my Nas in 2018 bought 4 18tb Red pro, then 2 more in 2022, now I bought 2 more red pros - this is the 1st time the drives did not come in the normal packaging, they where loose in a big box - unbelievable, Now I'll be worried about those 2 drives failing in RAID. I thought buying start from the company I wouldn't have to worry about getting refurb drive on a new purchase .. it sadens me that i have to have this extra worry :( :)
I would recommend this to a friend!

not suitable for NAS despite the name
on May 8, 2024
Posted by: jrt63..
I have 15 of the 16TB and 15 of the 18TB drives in NAS units (the 16TB are about 1 year older). I have now had three 16TB and one 18TB fail. It leads me to ask: Are these really not rated for use in NAS despite the name? Have there been manufacturing issues? Does WD have a more appropriate drive? Is there an upgrade pathway to the more appropriate drive?
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hello,
We're sorry to hear your user experience with the WD Red Pro Hard Drives and appreciate your time for providing this review.
Based on your concern, if the drive is not showing up on the computer then it could be due to insufficient power supply to the drive for operation. To isolate the cause of the drive failure, it is recommended to connect the drive as secondary storage via SATA port to the computer and check the drive for any damage or defect.
We recommend connecting the drive as secondary storage via SATA port to the computer, to test the health of the drive using Western Digital Dashboard for Windows.
"Western Digital Dashboard: How to Install and Use" https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/31759#subject2
If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

Honest Company...

I have used Western Digital all my computer life, I am blessed to not have experienced other companies problem making! I hear from friends, relatives and common conversation what it is like with these drive manufacturers. I tell you the truth you cannot do better than Western Digital thy quality is there in everything they make or your money back. If you are aloof then you can follow directions and figure out what does ail thy drive usually some unknown factor in your build is straining thy drive beyond tolerance if they fail however they are honest, you can get a refund, replacement or tech support.

Drive will not be recognized as ACHI it is documented on the packaging I believe. Set your SATA PCH in bios to IDE.
