Awesome Hard Drive 4TB 256MB cache

WD Gold is one of the best hard drives out there. But, It seems to make a little rattle from time to time and I don't see a 256MB cache feel. Great drive though.

Five Gold Stars for WD Gold
on June 15, 2021

WD is the gold standard for hard drives. I have used the Black Edition for over 20 years. For my latest build I decided to install n SSD fro the OS and program files. I would use the WD Gold for data. I am very happy with my WD choices. The Gold 4 TB responds well. Based on my experience, I expect this drive to function well beyond its 5 year warranty. I have never had a WD drive to fail, but usually replace them by year 8. Five Gold stars for the WD 4 TB Gold Edition.

A little worried
on June 30, 2021

These HDDs are highly recommended and I have had great luck with WD drives in the past. They are set up in a raid 1+0 and are used as daily back-ups of work data on a TB3 external enclosure. Throughput is good and they continually pass all diagnostics. The reason for 3 of 5 stars is that at least one of the drives and likely 2 are very noisy. They rattle, clank and gurgle when accessed (not the head crashing type of noise). Because of that I may be replacing them. The shopping exp was good, delivery was fast, packaging was excellent, performance as stated is good.

Hi john d c,

Thank you for showing your interest in the WD Gold Enterprise-Class SATA HDD and we appreciate your time for sharing your valuable feedback with us.

Please know that the external drive makes noise during normal drive operation. The type and volume of noise are dependent on whether the is drive performing a read/write operation or idle with the heads parked. The environment where the drive is functioning may also influence noise. It is important to recognize which noises indicate trouble or normal drive operation. If the drive is not getting an uninterrupted power supply from the computer then it could cause the drive to make noise. Please refer to the WD support page to know more.

"How To Tell If The Noise or Sound An Internal Drive Makes is Normal":
Search for knowledge base article: 16309

"A Western Digital hard drive makes a repeated clicking noise every 5 seconds":
Search for knowledge base article: 14842

The Best practice is to run the extended test on the drive using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows or First Aid using Disk Utility on a Mac computer. Please refer to the links mentioned below and follow the instructions to perform an extended test using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics or First Aid using Disk Utility on Mac.

"Testing a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows":
Search for knowledge base article: 6226

"How to test a drive for defects or problems on a Mac":

If the test is inconclusive and the drive is under warranty, you can replace the drive by creating RMA with Western Digital. To know the steps to create an RMA, you can refer to the link mentioned below.

"How to Get an RMA to Replace a Defective Product, Obtain a Power Supply, or USB Cable for a WD Product":
Search for knowledge base article: 10336

We would like to follow up with you to help discover the root cause of your drive’s abnormal behavior. We suggest you contact our Support team by phone or email to ensure an overall good experience with Western Digital. We'd be happy to help.

Long Time WD Owner And Never Disappointed

Purchased a new Omen desktop screaming machine. This was exactly what the doctor ordered. I have a WD disk drive (external) that I've owned for over 10 years. It's case was broken in a move, but it is still humming along. Love WD. Thanks again for a great product. All my SSD drives are WD, also. Nothing compares. I was IT in my past career, and I always loved your hard drives.
