Terrible choice

After bad experiences with less expensive printers, I decided to spend a bit more money for my home all-in-one unit and get something better. Canon's reputation as a printer manufacturer was good, the price was competitive so I thought I'd made a good decision.
Well, that proved false. The printer works well wirelessly and scan quality is adequate, and when it prints well, it prints well. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen as often as it should. Most of the time there are smudges, lines, or other marks that simply shouldn't be there. It frequently grabs two sheets of paper at a time and often prints part of the page on one sheet, the rest on the other. The colors are completely off most of the time and it is inconsistent, that is, I can print the same document twice and get entirely different colors.
This printer frequently goes into some sort of initialization mode or head cleaning or some such when you try to print, which can take several minutes before printing starts.
The user interface for scanning (from the computer) is without question the worst I have ever seen. If you want to change the folder to scan to, I've counted around eight to ten clicks to scan where it should be about two or three at most. You have to go through several windows when it could easily be done on one. Also, I was dumbfounded the first time I scanned when the scanner automatically appended the date and a sequence number to the file. This is a normal function/feature on most scanners, however I don't need it. When I couldn't find how to disable the feature (I looked everywhere for a checkbox to turn it off), I finally called tech support, they said there was no way to turn it off and I "just need to go in an manually change the file name to erase the date and sequence." So I now have to scan, then go and modify the file name.
I've had this printer for less than two years and have been disappointed in it pretty much from the get-go. When printing got worse, I tried to find how to get it repaired, but the website was useless and I was told that it was out of warranty so they would not do repairs.
One other thing, this thing guzzles ink. Expensive to operate.
I'm shopping for a new printer, not Canon... ever again.

I am sorry to be giving this review, because I have always been happy with Canon in past. I have been waiting 1 week for a replacement printer for a brand new printer which would not allow me to change an ink cartridge when it called for a replacement. The fact that the printer had a insurmountable problem did not bother me, it is the time being used to replace it.

With Covid 19 forcing a lot of us to work from home, I needed a printer that can scan to email, and has decent printing capabilities. For me, I’ll be printing the kids worksheets as I’m using this for all of their remote school work and scanning their work. This printer meets all those needs. Setting up was a breeze. I’ve always used Canon products so I’m always partial because they never disappoint. For picture printing I use my Canon Pixma and not this printer. The scanning has been awesome with the ability to scan to multiple PDF by using the flatbed when you can’t use the Automatic Document Feeder right from the control panel. You can rotate from within the screen panel saving you the editing on the computer. Great printer, easy software and setup.

I Love and Hate This Printer

I love and hate this printer. The good news, when the printer works, its GREAT. Print quality is decent and fast. Scans piles of documents well. Software and utilities good with plenty of options. Now the bad. The ink cartridge system is the worst I've ever experienced... I should say suffered. First, you can't just swap the cartridges whenever you want. The printer demands that the cartridge be empty. Why? When you do run out of ink and swap the cartridges, the nightamre begins. Without exaggeration, I've had to do nozzle and deep cleanings 30-40 times to get the printer to print again - black is the worst. Think of all the time and ink wasted. Did anyone test this printer? Beyond frustrating and completely unacceptable for a printer in this price range.

Overall, good performance, but envelope printing could be made easier. This is my second MB5420; the first just “died” after 8 years service.

First, I own 2 Canon Selphy's - 4 MX- 922's and now the Maxify. For a home office with Real Estate, I must say this machine is Awesome. Prints double sided for both photos and Text. Cell phone print, and cloud print. Clean, Clear, Precise. Fax & copy are great. Please read and follow the set up procedures. A little care can go a long way. Oh Yea, My other printers are all still working and doing a wonderful job.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Old software no longer works

While the printer has held up software that ties it to devices has not been updated. It no longer prints from android because the CA certificate self signed for the device is not acceptable to Android devices when installed . Even manually installed. The encryption of the self signed cert is too old.
