Different than the regular can opener!

This can opener is unlike any one you’ve ever owned. Instead of connecting the opener along the side of a can, you put this opener perpendicular to the can on the near edge. After turning the knob the full 360 degrees around the can, it looks like nothing happened. Now you remove the opener and use the small jaws on the side of the opener to pull the lid off (there’s no other way to do it). The benefits of the opener are now apparent - there’s no sharp edges and you can place the lid back on top of the can to cover i for storage if needed.

BEST MANUAL CAN OPENER

I love using this OXO Smooth Edge can opener. You can’t get cut. You don’t have to handle the top once it is detached from the can because the can opener pincers do that for you.
The best thing you can do is read the very “tiny” manual that is included.
The only drawback — it doesn’t work on every type of can top. It does work on most cans. If it’s not working, turn the can upside down. That may do it.
I am choosing safety over any other considerations because I use it every day to open my pet-food cans. It has taken away the worry about opening a can. With electric can openers you still have to handle the sharp top to place it in the garbage.

Can opener

I’ve had another well-known brand of smooth edge can openers for many years and I have to say that the Oxo is pretty close. The only thing I find that’s slightly annoying is getting the lid off after opening. Perhaps if I had more occasions to use this tool, I’d feel differently.

SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT! Do NOT buy this!

Tonight I opened a can with my new manual can opener. An Oxo, that leaves smooth edges for a safer experience.
I beg to differ.
Once the canned was opened I noticed these splinter like things hanging off the can that resembled hairs. THEY ARE NOT HAIRS! DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE THEM WITH YOUR BARE FINGERS as they are little splinters of the can.
It was a splinter JUST LIKE THAT that nearly sliced my fingertip off a few weeks ago.
I cannot with a clear conscious recommend this type of can opener to anybody. In fact, I consider it to be very UNSAFE. I don’t want anybody losing a finger.

Works great, better design than the prior model

Thank you so much for working with me on the issues with my prior OXO opener. The model you sent as a replacement has a different mechanism design that seems it might be more reliable. Also, it is so much easier to use. The handle on the side is much more comfortable than the model that has the handle at the top. Although, a left-handed person would struggle using the side mounted handle. I happen to be left-handed, but am actually a bit ambidextrous so I have no issues. Being a lefty though, it's something I thought about and felt it was important to share. Thank you OXO!

I don't understand why anyone is still using the old type of can opener that cuts the metal and creates a sharp edge. This one gently separates the lid along the seam where it was glued to the can, and the handy little gripper make it easy to lift it off.
