I have owned quite a few receivers over the years, types with average power and lots of features as well as mega power with minimal features. One thing is for sure, when you consider buying a Sony you may be just as satisfied with their lower lines chalked for of goodies and right up there with the Jones's. But when you take it to the limit this company is the innovator. Take for example this flag ship series ES with 4k, if you want a music juggernaut you found it, if you want a theater receiver you found it but you better know something about setting up your area for sound. This AV is a no nonsense unit, don't look for "toys" such as wifi, internet or blue tooth. I also own a flagship Sony TV that the unit has trouble communicating with but if your TV is set as a monitor what else do you need. I am a sound guy and this receiver is the "Sledge Hammer" in my theater tool shed. I am also a musician and this AV unit can put you in the front row of a symphony hall, rock venue or a useful romantic setting. A real crowd pleaser!

I'll start off by saying 4 stars is probably my best rating i'v ever given. Nothing is perfect. That being said, this AVR is probably the best I've worked with at this price point. Unless you go with a Meridian or other high end system, this could be one of the best audio experiences you can find.
Easy setup and calibration, works well with my remote control system.

Simply Amazing!

I have owned five Sony ES AV Receivers over the years, always pleased with their performance and features. But this new ZA3000ES has raised the bar even higher in every category. And at a price that I consider to be a very reasonable for the quality. The ease of setting it up was very impressive give the complexity of it's capability. I highly recommend this ES model, definitely exceeded my expectations.

Gorgeous! STR-ZA3000ES with SSCS5's and SACS9

To upgrade our soundbar-based home theater system, I recently bought the STR-ZA3000ES (June 2018), along with two SSCS5 Core Series bookshelf speakers to add to an exceptionally capable SACS9 subwoofer that we have enjoyed thoroughly for several years. The STR-ZA3000ES is superb and performs audio and video functions as beautifully as it looks and is designed and built. This product easily earns Five Stars all the way from me with no hesitation! I have sought the opportunity to own such a high quality system as this for several years. I have done endless hours of research and auditioning of many brands and products. I appreciate that Sony has packed this and its other products with quality materials, components, engineering, and design to deliver amazing sound and video. The emphasis on designing the STR-ZA3000ES was clearly not on cheap gimmicks and features that can easily be added on with various connections made available on the unit. Such gimmick features are affordable, but not always wanted or used, and often become upgraded or obsolete, anyway. Beautiful, stop-you-in your-tracks sound and picture are never gimmicks in such a fine product as this. Sony knows that hearing and seeing is believing. I highly recommend any Sony AV receiver, especially the ES line to anyone who wants to experience why Sony is so well regarded by discerning skeptics like me who love the way Sony stops us in our tracks.

It's GREAT with only two caveats

Really like the new receiver. I replaced an STR DN-1020 with this one, and it is great. It eliminates the need for a separate switch, has plenty of inputs. The two caveats are as follow: first the 1020 had a built in satellite tuner, the new one does not, second there is only one 4k input, which means if you have a streaming device like the Apple TV 4k, you cannot output 4 k from both your cable box and the streaming device and get 4k output to your TV.

DEFECTIVE Receivers

The whole line of ES avr's have many issues which are not being addressed by SONY.
The units will make extremely loud pops while you are watching a movie and then the unit will power down and have to be restarted. The unit has constant relay clicking every 20 seconds in standby mode. The unit make smaller popping sounds from all speakers connected to it, whenever you press a remote control command. Too many BUGS with these units. Read AVS forums under title Sony is Back". I own other Sony electronic and photography products and think they are excellent, BUT having also owned ES line equipment in the past, I can honestly say that these new ES receivers are not ES quality, not even entry level, brcause they are posing a risk to your other home theater components.
