We got this machine to test out my using a serger to help with production. So this was purchased as part of my professional studio. I admit it WAS tricky to learn. So many variables at once. But once I got the hang of it, it was easy! You MUST MUST MUST read the instructions. Its not like a regular sewing machine at all. If you have never used a serger, please realize that it is a different animal. It is a bit noisy. We did have to buy thread also, cheap cones from Joannes wont work.

Brand new out of the box and it doesn't work!

I have had my ProFinish serger for a few years but never used it. Took it out of the box to use it for the very first time and after checking the threading and getting excited.... nothing. The foot pedal doesn't move the needles, the hand wheel doesn't turn. Nothing moves. It makes a terrible sound but nothing moves at all! Customer service was polite and genuine, however, unable to give guidance as there is no bobbin casing to remove and they recommended I take it to a repair shop. Sadly I live hours away from one and it's not possible to return it as it is a few years old and given as a gift. I'm very disappointed. It seems that this is a common issue with this particular serger after doing some further searching online. I am very disappointed that a brand new serger that has zero sewing time would need a repair shop to fix it!

I really like this machine, and it's my first serger. But as some of the other reviews said, it is a little loud. Threading the bottom compartment is difficult, but everything is color-coded and there is a guide on the machine which is helpful. But they only give you a pair of tweezers to help you get the thread through the tiny holes on the loopers. The DVD explains everything. There is a lot of repetition in it, but it is a very good guide and made so much sense. I got my serger off simplicity.com where I found it to be the cheapest. I hope this review was helpful! God bless!

This is the first serger I've ever had. I have not been able to use it for over 2 months because there was always something screwed up with the stitches. I followed the threading instructions carefully to no avail. I finally had to give up and use my sewing machine to complete the project I was working on. After a good amount of frustration I finally found different threading instructions on the Singer website. Following those instructions just, the stitches work perfectly which amazed me. I am now looking forward to using this machine. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that nothing else goes wrong.

After sewing one garment the tension no longer worked. Paid $100 to get it repaired, and is still skips stiches. Currently I have 4 singer sewing machines and this the worse Singer I have ever owned. Don't waste your money and time.

Sorry you are having issues. When threading the heavy duty make sure to have the presser foot raised and that the thread is going in the center of the tension disk. On this model it's possible to thread between the right disk and the tension dial accidentally. Then you will have no tension on the threads. For skipped stitches. Loosen both needle screws, while holding the needles so they don't fall out. Then push them up as far a they will go. One will be higher. Now tighten the screws back. Because the needles are so close together, it's necessary to loosen both screws even when only working with a single needle. Hope this helps.

First time using a serger

Please keep in mind I have never before used a serger. That said, I can't believe I didn't I get one sooner!!!! The instructions for threading were easy to follow, (the thought of threading a serger was the biggest concern I had), and because it came pre-threaded, I was able to see up close what it was supposed to look like before I unthreaded it so I could practice. It was simple enough I got it the first time. I love it so much that I have sewn more in the month I've had it than I did in the past 10 years!

I would not buy this again

The serger worked great for about a 7 months. Then it lost all tension on the threads. I tried re-threading, upgrading thread, changing needles, changing fabrics, and every combination of tension settings you could imagine. The stitches were still super loose. Apparently Singer's are not what they used to be. Save the extra money and buy a better brand of serger.

Timber, sorry you are having issues with your 14CG754. If you have no tensions on the threads, double check that the thread is between the tension disc (always raise presser foot when threading). It is quite possible to accidentally get the thread between the right side tension disc and the tension dial, instead of between the disc. If this occurs no matter the setting, there will not be correct tension on the threads.

I have spent the last two days of my life attempting to set the tension on this serger. I have sewn professionally for over 30 years and used many sergers of all brands. My trusty Singer serger finally died and I purchased this one. The bottom looper is almost impossible to thread once the thread breaks without taking the plate off and literally after two days still have not been able to set the tension to any acceptable level on polyester satin. I'm afraid this one will have to go back.

Tweezers will help with threading the last thread. A picture is in the lid showing how to use the tweezers to thread to the looper so the plate does not have to come off. Our manual also has the recommended tension setting for the machine that may help. Even having an older serger, tensions can be different on all machines.
