Too bad

Well, I'm sorry to say that this product has really left me wondering what's up at Canon... The image quality is good enough at lower ISOs --- BUT the camera response to menu commands, button clicks, multiple shutter exposures is soooooo slow it reminds you of the early digital cameras.. Certainly not what you would expect. Buy a G12 while they're still available. I love my Canon equipment BUT I'm going to have to find another home for this one soon. Sorry, but this one is just not worth the money and has really surprised me with its slow performance.
Pros: Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings, Short battery life, slow
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great IQ, but needs learning curve.

This is a great addition to those who already have and know how to use a DSLR. I just sold my 7D, because I just brought a 5Dmk3 and wanted a walkaround body. The learning curve might look like this, first learn to rely on LCD, viewer is a joke. Set AF point to center helpiing with AF not hunting and composition!, third learn to hold it steady. Don't just rely on Stabilizer, Forth use PoP up, Yes I said Use Pop up. The sensor inside is so good, you will only need the pop up and your IQ will be better then you imagine, I Promise. I also tested a 430 ex ii on here and no issues worked great. when using the Pop up flash the IIQ is as good as my 7D no Joke!! Love the manual controls, two wheels and ISO on rear. No issues learning if you know Canon. I went right through the menu in just a few minuets. Honestly i hate Point & Shoots, so it took my a few hours last night to figure all this out, I'm writing about to help others. Canon left some room for improvement but this body kills the g-12, just on IQ alone. The video is superb, heard the audio is no good but didn't test, sorry. I hated the Nex 5N almost fell out of my hands just tryign P/U and manual controls are hidden in menu, plus not hot shoe, this is by far a better all around Point & shoot for Professionals with great 1600 ISO and very good 3200 ISO plus usable 6400 ISO I know I tested it. Only in Jpeg with out any noise reduction software.
Pros: great iq, solid build, good manual controls, beautiful bright lcd, nice simple features, good ergonomics / grip, sharp lens, great video / features
Cons: incredibly slow af, bit heavy, poor view finder

great camera/ missing features

I have the G1x for about 18 months, having bought it shortly after it was released. I wanted the larger sensor and the external (non-menu) controls. I had read most of the critical reviews and was not put off by the slower focus and lack of macro. Neither was a deal breaker. There are 2 rather inexplicable problems when using external flash. One, there is a noticeable delay after triggering shutter and when the external flash fires. The built in flash does not have this problem. Second is the lack of TTL flash when shooting in manual Canon DSLRs have TTL flash in manual, cannot understand why it would be disabled. Firmware upgrade could probably fix these issues, but Canon seems reluctant to provide updates for Powershot cameras.
Cons: Missing features/settings, Short battery life, steep learning curve

I had a chance to use this camera,i have a G12 before that a g11,g10,g9 and g9 so iam a experenced g-man.(ha ha) What i really like is the brightness of the revamped bright 2.8 lens,1.5 inch c-mos sensor, pixel count all add up to good low light pictures with out alot of "noise". Remember this is a travel camera,so it smaller then a dslr but a little bigger then the G -12,uses a smaller sized battery.
I am a avid scuba diver so i will have to buy a new underwater housing for this camera but the new wider angle 28mm lens, with brighter lens and more pixels has me excited about the greater quality of wide angle underwater shots ill get(less need for an external undwerwater wide angle)Like the flex, larger LED screen, solid case, placement of buttons and great grip rubber handles, Now one can video in true 1080p and zoom as well...
All in all iam very impressed with this new product...
Pros: 1080p videow zoom, bright 2.8 optics28 mm, still travel sized, 3.0 high pixelveri- angle led viewfinder, improved ergonomicsrubbergrips
Cons: bigger then most point&shoot, need all new acces..

A bit of a clunker

I am a big Canon fan and I only use Canon cameras. I have the 5D Mk II, the D10, the G10 (which I am giving to one of my sons and which I am replacing with the G1X), and the S100. Every time I picked up a new Canon it was love at first sight, the feel, the features, the improvements over the previous model, etc. The camera is a bit of a clunker, too big for a pocket camera and too small for an SLR. Unlike the G10, here I find myself coping with the lens cover dangling on one side and the rotating screen on the other. Two distractions. Also I find the Macro does not work as well as it did with the G10. Maybe I am doing something wrong. Lasltly I wish the lens retracted fully and that the zoom went down to 24 mm. You compare the G1X to the S100 where the feel, design, etc. are just sublime. Canon at its best. Back to the drawing board and hopefully an improved G2X?
Cons: too numerous

Disappointed, unfortunately

Good image quality, but the close focussing is not very good, more like an old rangefinder camera. This would not be the camera to get if you like shooting closeup. This is more like a snapshot camera, but I have my phone for that. The biggest disappointment however is the lack of a printed user manual. I can't believe a camera this expensive doesn't have this included. When you are shooting in the field, You can't pull out your computer to look up something on the pdf manual. Don't get this camera 2 days before a vacation. You will be frustrated, as you will not be able to figure most things out. Also, all the cool modes that this camera promises like HDR, Toy camera effect, etc. are only good when you want to shoot jpegs. In other words, no RAW. The flipout screen is cool, but it lacks a solid piece of glass/plastic to cover and protect the screen. I don't understand why canon would leave this off the design. They tout how robustly built the metal body is, etc. The G9 and G10 had a solid protective cover over the screen. With the G1X you must be extra careful when leaving the screen in the open position. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this camera.
Pros: still have my g9 thank goodness
Cons: limited features for raw, no printed user manual, wimpy flipout screen, front filter adapter falls off. wimpy design, printed manual not included, did i mention that there is no printed manual?, and the manual is where? on your computer!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Better Than Ever

I've been using a T1i, T3i and a G10 as a back-up and for those "you can't use those camera's here" and for everyday catch'em shots. I fell in love when I saw and felt the G1x. It just feels right, well all except the film button almost under my right thumb! Is there any way to reprogram or deactivate it? Otherwise I love this camera. The raw exposures are a little dark but have lots of 'meat' on them and are easy revised to meet my needs or expectation. It is also my 'go to' camera for vacationing and those not to be missed photos of the grand-kids!
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: 'film' button in the way
I would recommend this to a friend!

"Love my G1X" When I'm not wanting to sling my 7D with lens around the G1X works great for me. Outside or inside this camera excels. I have large hands and the larger body makes things a lot more comfortable.
Hopefully the "G2X" will have a full sensor, faster autofocus and a upgraded optical viewer.
Pros: metal body, body size, sensor size, it's a canon!
