the external burner works great. Just plug it in and install it in a few minutes. I have been using it now for a while with no problems. I highly recommend it.

The Dell 8x External DVD/RW USB Slim Drive performs superior task in browsing my DVD/CD files. The USB cord gives it an adequate 2 feet length from the USB port that is good enough to position the DVD drive in a free spot near my laptop. I never tried the DVD drive to write data files on a disk though. But overall performance, the Dell External drive is awesome.
