Great upgrade for Alienware 15 R3 Gaming Laptop

I purchased this SSD to upgrade the mechanical 7200 RPM hard drive that came with my laptop and I couldn't be happier. I have a NVMe 512GB PCIe SSD (Boot) and 2TB EVO 850 SSD (Storage). As soon as I installed the EVO 850 2TB SSD my laptop had more than enough space to install all the game and software that I have. With no hassles cloning the original drive. Now I have more options when it comes to installing new games and software.
Pros: Durable, a bit expensive
Cons: none so far
I would recommend this to a friend!

Pros: My OCZ 64Gb drives was down to the last 420mb. They were great drives, but a 5 year old Sata II SSDs don't compare to this Sata III beast. I bought 2, one for my PC and one for my wife's PC. I will definitely be buying one more of these for my daughter's PC.
This Samsung SSD comes with Data Migration software for cloning an existing partition as well as Samsung Magician software for optimizing the drive. There is no need to buy or download any other cloning software. The cloning process was easy and took about an hour with an external USB to Sata II enclosure (I had one laying around).
The Samsung Magician software identified that I had the SSD set for IDE and not AHCI (AHCI is much faster).
Benchmarks with the SSD set for IDE were terrible, and here they are:
Benchmarks are as follows:
Sequential Read - 346 MB/Sec
Sequential Write - 440 MB/Sec
Random Read - 9074 IOPS
Random Write - 18,623 IOPS
After correcting and converting to AHCI my benchmarks are as follows:
Sequential Read - 532 MB/Sec
Sequential Write - 506 MB/Sec
Random Read - 39,839 IOPS
Random Write - 34,084 IOPS
Much improved and you can really tell the difference, especially with game loading.
Cons: None at this moment. I'll update this review in a month or two.
Other Thoughts: If you installed Windows 7 in IDE mode and realize you actually needed AHCI mode for better SSD performance, you can fix this issue easily. You can't just go into the Bios during windows 7 boot up or your OS will crash. The following are instructions on how I corrected my IDE to AHCI:
1) Startup -> Regedit
2) Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlset / Services
3) Open msahci
4) In the right pane, left click on "start" then right click and select "Modify"
5) In the "value" data field enter "0" and click OK.
6) exit Regedit
7) Reboot your system and enter your BIOS (hold "Delete" key while rebooting)
8) In the BIOS select "Integrated Peripherals" and Onchip PATA/SATA Devices.
9) Change SATA Mode to AHCI from IDE
10) Save and exit BIOS, and boot into Windows 7. The OS will recognize AHCI and install the devices. Your system will now need one more reboot, then you'll have the screaming SSD you've always wanted.
Pros: great performance
Cons: none

Old Guy

Even though I am 69 years old with a 7 year old laptop, with minimum computer skills, I was able to easily clone my old hard drive to this Samsung EVO. The software included with the drive performed flawlessly with absolutely no issues. It did take 4.25 hours to complete the data migration. The results so far seem to be good in that the response time on my laptop is significantly faster that with my old HDD.

It truly delivers the highest performance at an affordable price !

I have read so many reviews regarding Samsung's class leading performance, so many reviews that I wondered if it was just everyone piling on the bandwagon, and not actual real world results. I say this due to so many people who love to run benchmark's over and over again, constantly tweaking their setups until until they reach some rarefied, unrepeatable number. A number that bears little resemblance to consistent, day to day performance. After Samsung released the new 850 series, at an even lower price then the highly regarded 840 series, I was even more hesitant that the "NEW" version could deliver the same high level of performance . I'm happy to report that id truly does deliver the performance, and at a bargain price !
My original SSD purchase was just a few months back (9-23-2014) from a highly regarded memory maker. It is a good performing SSD, and was roughly 20% less in price then the 840 series at that time. The trade off being that it didn't match the 840's performance, and I had to settle for that lesser performance to save a few bucks. Unfortunately, the zippy performance began to slow down a bit. Still decent, but even less then what I had originally bargained for. ENTER the 850 EVO ! The same class leading performance, but at an even lower price then before ! So low that I paid even less for the 850 EVO, then I paid for my earlier SSD ! After spending some time with the new 850 EVO, I can say that I have never before experienced the speed and convenience that SAMSUNG has delivered. Real world performance that matches the promised speeds, and with the MAGICIAN software, a simple and easy to understand user's guide that makes it so effortless to achieve the best possible performance. Setup was even easier then before with SAMSUNG's DATA MIGRATION Software . My earlier SSD setup used the ACRONIS software which worked well enough. But the Samsung DATA Migration software was even easier to use, and I was up and running in no time at all !
All in all, I'm happy to say that all of the buzz surrounding SAMSUNG SSD's is deserved. They truly deliver the best performance and at a bargain price to boot ! Couple that with the included SAMSUNG software, and you have an unbeatable combination !
Pros: Inexpensive, top performance for less ...

Fast sata drive that is huge

This drive is huge. It fits in these new, thin laptops. It is sata based which makes it fast and compatible with just about all motherboards out there. What I like most about Samsung drives they come packaged with their "Magician" software to transfer your data, programs and even the operating system. Very nice. This alone has made me continue to use Samsung programs. Oh, this drive is warranted for 5 years - very nice.
Pros: huge fast
Cons: cost but worth the money

This drive plus 4gig of memory took my laptop from a snails pace to a jaguar. I do a lot of photography and it used to take almost a full minute to load Photoshop CS 5.5, now it only takes about 5 seconds. It has improved my work throughput a LOT!!!
