Only good for watching surround sound movies.

The Samsung HT-J4100 produces sound that lacks in quality when listening to music. The sub-woofer is acceptable, but the other speakers sound like they distort with full input volume setting the receiver volume above 14 and it goes to level 50. Admittedly, with full input volume at level 13 is enough to fill a 200 square foot room with sound loud enough to be happy on an average listening basis, but if it gets louder, the sound quality just is not there. Also, the wires that come with the speakers, that you can not change without voiding the warranty, are too short to hide behind a wall and place the speaker to the right of or behind where you will be watching TV. The equalizer has only 6 frequency settings you can adjust. Additionally, the unit will use only "the front speakers" (the two front speakers and the sub-woofer) when you try to listen to anything but a movie that has 5.1 (or higher) surround sound unless you choose the "Master Stereo" equalizer which will result in no frequency volume adjustment to the input source which takes away your ability to raise the bass above the treble or vice versa.
When watching a movie, the sound system is actually much better for some reason. However, all it can do is play movies, display pictures, or play music on a disc or USB drive. It does have the ability to receive local radio broadcasts if that interests you, but considering that you got this product, it should be reasonable to assume you would want more control over the songs you listen too than what comes over the airwaves. It does not have any networking ability, so it will not be able to have any apps such as Netflix.
In summary, if all you intend to do with this is watch 5.1 (or better) surround sound movies on disc or USB without caring if the wires are under your rug, then this is a good product for you. If you plan on using it primarily to listen to music, or if you want the wires completely out of site (from my experience most women do), get something else.

Speakers Crackling
on December 13, 2015

After owning this product for 2 months, the speakers started crackling periodically. As you can imagine this becomes quite a nuisance when watching movies and television shows.
Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: Poor quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I've purchased two of these within the last two years, one only lasted a year my latest one only eight months. Why did I buy a second one, because I love everything about this player except for it's reliability and never expected it to develop the same problem as the first player..
Pros: Inexpensive, Realistic color, Bright display, Built-in speakers, Lightweight
Cons: Poor quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

you can find better for cheaper

Okay, I'll start by saying that the sound is great. Very simple to setup and the system has a nice sleek look. With that being said, it truly disappointing that you cannot connect your phone through the AUX or the USB port. So NO you cannot play music or videos or anything else for that matter from your phone. There is no bluetooth capability or internet access for things such as iheart radio or Pandora. You will have to resort back to the obsolete days of having to literally use the computer to create a play list then transfer the music to a USB Flask. What makes it even worse there is no shuffle or random play option. There also a lot of disk it doesnt read. This was just not worth the price.
Pros: Lightweight
Cons: Did not meet expectations, can't connect phone, it's obsolete and there are better systems 4 cheap
