I am not sure why you said the regular cartridges were bigger than the XL cartridges. That should not be the case. I wonder if you got an XL cartridge from a third-party source. Maybe the XL cartridge was a counterfeit one. Regardless, our XL cartridges are of great value because they are high-yield. I hope you continue to buy HP. It is understandably dismaying that the cartridge did not work immediately. Since this cartridge was bought directly from HP, it is most likely not a counterfeit cartridge. First, take the cartridge out and reinsert it.
Occasionally, the printer simply doesn't register the cartridge. If that doesn't solve it, it is a defective cartridge. HP accepts returns for defective cartridges. Here is the site to start a return: https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/cv/ReturnsandExchanges?id=page-return-exchange-policy/.

HP 564XL High Yield Black Original Ink Cartridge

This time 564XL Black cartridge was a dud. The HP printer accepts it and it looks as if it is filled with black ink, but the printer won't print black. Plus the outside of the cartridge did not have the over wrapped white paper on it.
