Reduction of Tax Stress.

What's great about it: Simple, direct, and very user-friendly
What's not so great: Could not calculate local and state taxes to be admitted on Schedule A

The software is easy to use and get answers. It gives you the option of loading everything yourself or let turbo tax do it for you.

Recharacterization nightmare

My wife and I both converted portions of our traditional IRAs to Roths. I also recharacterized a portion back to my traditional IRA. Turbotax instructed me to delete one of the imported 1099-Rs and manually enter two 1099-Rs that add up to the total of the deleted 1099-R. This required clarification and reassurance from the very helpful people on the tax help phone support line that it really is OK to delete one 1099-R and make up two more. Furthermore, we had four 1099-Rs from the same custodian, and it was not possible to know with certainty which 1099-R was the subject of several questions about each one, so it took multiple passes to get out of tax jail. I learned to never again do a recharacterization.
What's great about it: Very helpful Turbotax CPA helped understand next steps.
What's not so great: No automatic support built into Turbotax product to handle this.

Excellent, but limits

Very good program, but would be much better if a few restrictions were removed. First, I had some income calling for a schedule C. The program took the 1099MISC, but not the non 1099 income and never brought up the schedule C. I had to access the schedule C in the forms file. Also, each year I donate a number of items on different dates and prepare a list showing dates, items, condition, retail prices, and thrift shop prices to attach to my tax forms. However, the TurboTax form 8283 will not let me put in "Various" for the date of donation, and instead wants me to put in each item with its date. Not workable for over 100 items. Why not allow "Various" and let me refer to my detailed list as an attachment? I have complained about this every year with no results.
What's great about it: Complete and easy to use
What's not so great: Limitations
