Another Tax Year Completed :)

I have been using tax software since my 2001 tax return, of which the past 10 years has been exclusively TurboTax. Overall, my return is not difficult - a few W-2s, my student loan paperwork and my HSA information. Once I have all of my paper work ready to enter into the program, total time is approximately 45 minutes from start to finish. I have recommend this program to friends when they ask if I do my own taxes or which software do I use.
What's great about it: Easy to enter information and easy to edit changes.
What's not so great: None that I have found.

TurboTax makes doing & filing taxes a lot simpler!

The TurboTax software program is easy to install and use. It makes doing and filing tax returns a lot simpler. It is also cost-effective compared to using an actual tax preparer. If you know how to operate a computer and utilize common software, then TurboTax software is not difficult to use. However, bear in mind, that it does not alleviate you from your responsibility to gather all required documentation, records, paperwork and receipts beforehand and to crunch the numbers in some cases so that the figures are suitable for entry into the software. In other words, you still gotta to do some prep work. I utilized the Deluxe version. For the most part it worked flawlessly. However, it doesn't address everything. Two weaknesses in the TurboTax software program that I experienced involve entering tax-exempt interest info and reporting dividend info from 1099-PATR forms. The program doesn't seem to realize that you can have Federal tax-exempt interest to report that is not tied to any particular state. However, the program keeps insisting that you report tax-exempt interest from Federal taxation as though it is connected to a particular state. The only way around it is to select the option that you have tax-exempt interest from more than one state and leave it at that - which is kind of stupid and doesn't make much sense. Secondly, very little guidance is proffered with respect to reporting dividend payments from 1099-PATR forms that are not connected with farming or your ownership of a business or self-employed enterprise. For people who earn such dividends simply because they frequently shop at a co-operative store/facility and reap an end-of-year rebate/reward, which is paid back to them via a 1099-PATR form, they are NOT given any guidance on where to input the information in TurboTax. I resorted to reporting it under Other Income which equates to Line 21 on Form 1040. Poorly done TurboTax! Aside from these two issues, and probably a few other quirks that I didn't encounter, TurboTax software is a fairly reliable program - particularly, because of how it checks and reviews everything before submission. Overall, I think it is pretty good and helpful!
What's great about it: Thorough, Systematic, User-Friendly & Cost Effective!
What's not so great: Has a few quirks & idiosynchrosies.
