Temporary File Issue
on February 5, 2016
Posted by: Chuck196
I've been using TT for years without any problem, and really love it! However, this year I had one issue, which I feel TT should attend to.
Initially, I was filing MFJ with business related expenses, but then I changed to MFS, and deleted the business related expenses. However, the software still retained this deduction amount. I paged through the screens again, but still the amount remained. Then, I noticed that three TEMPORARY .tax2015 files were persisting; so, after saving and closing my file, I deleted these temporary files. Then, the problem went away. I feel that the issue may have arisen when I renamed my .tax2015 file in Windows Explorer instead of executing a Save As in the TT software. I feel that the TT software should automatically clean up these temporary files, thus precluding the issue.
What's great about it: Great Software
What's not so great: Temporary File Issue

This program makes doing taxes not so painful or dreadful. It walks you through step by step, covering all aspects of your year. It has been a reliable product for the last ten years or so!
What's great about it: Its Easy to use
What's not so great: none that I found
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Good - Could be great.

Good overall. Not very clear when it came to the part on healthcare coverage. I had more than one 1095-a to file & a 1095-b. It did not let you know up front that you could put in more than one 1095-a. Never did ask for the 1095-b, and worse, did not just say that you did not need to fill in anything, just keep it for your records. Had to dig for what to do with the 1095-b.
What's great about it: Easy to fill out and most of the questions were plainly worded.
What's not so great: Some answers had to be dug for.

Good, but I had to reload info from 2014

Works fine, but I didn't have to re-type all the info for my pension funds, employer, and charitable organizations.
What's great about it: Did what I needed it to do
What's not so great: I had to re-enter all the info from last year for pension plans, contributions, and W-2
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Some Bugs in Turbo Tax Deluxe

When entering Washington Drivers License ID, you can not use an asterisk. People in our state that have a last name with four letters have an asterisk after the forth letter follow by their first and middle initials.
Also, the software recommends filing as Head of Household, even when you indicate your child lived with you for less than 6 months and did not contribute more than half the support. Even putting one month still causes the program to recommend "Head of Household". I had to override the recommendation.
There should be a way to add the proceeds from the sale of covered stock options to the net proceeds of the sale of stock. It's not uncommon for stock with covered calls to get exercised. The proceeds from the sale of covered options, according to IRS rules, are suppose to be added to the proceeds from the sale of the underlying stock. Had to change the net proceeds manually in Turbo Tax.
Thanks for your time.
What's great about it: Easy to understand
What's not so great: You have a couple of flaws
