Best software around; not as good as accountant
on October 16, 2016

Hard to override fields when necessary and hard to tell where items come from. Very difficult for multi-year issues (carry-forwards, AMT, etc.)
What's great about it: Easy to use mostly
What's not so great: Difficult to override; not much flexibility
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

What Happened to TT.
on October 17, 2016

After at least 2 decades of using TT with some very complicated returns successfully , this years is an abomination. If my tax return is correct it will be an astonishment. A few of the more frustration things were its calculation of depreciation which would have written off my apartment building in 15 years rather then the required 27.5 year. When I click on the "Transmit Return Now" it responds with "We need one more check". That eventually takes me back to "Transmit Return Now: and it just keeps going on this loop so I am not able to transmit anything.
What's great about it: not much
What's not so great: It didn't functional correctly

Needs Improvement
on October 17, 2016

I've used turbo tax for 15 years and, as always, it handled most items with ease. There were a couple of problem areas this year.
The program had difficulties with partnership K-1s that included foreign source income and expenses. Even though all information on a K-1 saw entered in the appropriate screens, the diagnostic program insisted that additional amounts must be entered. The program refused to file my returns until I entered minuscule amounts as required.
In addition, one of the diagnostics indicated an error in the amount of expense allocated to foreign income on line 2 col C. To clear the diagnostic I was forced to enter and amount in this column and in line 1 col C.
In summary, the diagnostics were misleading and did not identify the correct place to enter revised numbers. Overall the diagnostics were a substantial time waster.
What's great about it: Solid performance on most areas.
What's not so great: Performance in handling K-1s with foreign income and expeses

Love it!

Turbo tax has a mini program that helps determine what your donated items are worth or valued. Without this tool I would be completely lost on how to value these items.
The program is easy to use. I tried a few other programs but went back to Turbo tax last year (especially after they gave us back the forms we sometimes need to complete this unpopular task of preparing our tax returns).
I purchase it from the discount warehouses during tax season to ensure I have the disk which I prefer. If I have to file an extension, I have the software to get the job done.
Thanks Turbo Tax for providing a great product.
What's great about it: Easy to use and understand
What's not so great: Hard to find a turbo tax software disk after tax season!

Need calculator within added detail sheets/ supporting information boxes. Any way to help determine whether one should take the standard deduction BEFORE I went through all the trouble of entering all the deductible items only to find out that (for the first time ever, I think, in my life) I had to take the standard rather than itemized deductions? The "nickname" part of this review is kinda nuts ... but it's your form ...
What's great about it: Easy to use; quite thorough
What's not so great: K-1 179 deduction explanation of how to handle and effect on return
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Would like to have the help section work better to answer my questions. I had a question and worded it several different ways and the box kept saying it was searching and never did give me an answer. disappointing since the tax return is due now.
What's great about it: Getting easier to follow the instructions and guiding through the sections
What's not so great: Still not getting all the answers I need. Maybe I don't know how to word them correctly.
