e-file blocked by nonexistent update

I have used TT for 15 years and have generally been pleased with its ease of use and clarity of explanations. However, this year, when I reached the point of e-filing, I repeatedly got a message that an update was required. But, then the update process would tell me my software was up to date. I spent multiple nights trying different suggestions from the support website, to no avail. Finally, I was able to locate a hint indicating TT updates to software on an external drive could cause this symptom. Ultimately, I had to uninstall, then reinstall TT. I spent as much or more time on this undocumented problem than I did in entering all my tax data. I am giving serious consideration to different tax software for next year's filing.
What's not so great: TT repeatedly asked for updates before e-filing

Works Every Time

I've used Turbo Tax for several years. It simplifies my filing and walks me through my many deductions and revenue sources. It works! Every time!
What's great about it: Fills out all forms for me, downloads W-2s, calculates values of in kind donations
What's not so great: Too many updates: can never login without waiting to install new updates
