2015 TT Review

It was not clear to me which of the two options/questions Turbo Tax asks about IRA distributions I should select. The first stated the money was rolled to another IRA and the second stated I did something else with the money. I had done both so I selected option 2 which was the incorrect option. I didn't realize if the first option is selected more options present themselves. Seems this should be made more intuitive as it resulted in errors on my form 8606 the last two years, which I did not catch.
I'm also a bit disappointed on how and when turbo tax handles the tax basis for distributions from an IRA that had both pre-tax and after tax contributions. I pulled in the 1099 from my financial firm and the box was checked regarding taxable amount not determined. It was my fault , but I got worried since I was not asked questions about tax basis at this juncture. As a result I went into the forms and tried to add information manually to from 8608. I had to go to a work sheet to accomplish it. I found out later turbo tax would get to a point where I was asked about tax basis. Although again I don't think that section is don't very intuitively.
What's great about it: Pulls in Info from last year pretty well. Pulls in info from bank sources easily.
What's not so great: Does not pull in tax info more than 3 years back. Does not handle IRA distributions cleanly for all cases.

I've used Turbo Tax for a few years now but the 2015 version was the best of them all

This was our 1st year that we had to claim our son's college expenses. Turbo Tax made it very simple to understand and maximize our deduction.

Helpful for record keeping

Filling out the info didn't take as much time this year because I kept better records and with more detail than previous years. I think Turbo Tax is a big contributor to me keeping better records. I know what things are important to highlight as the year goes by.
What's great about it: Step by step input even when I choose to enter just the items I want.

Quick and painless

If you don't have very complicated taxes this works like a charm. I only have Schedule A and C plus the standard 1040 form. Deductions are easy to submit. Donations to Good Will, The Salvation Army, and others are also easy to add. Home mortgage info, property taxes and real estate taxes also very easy to follow. I liked the updates and security questions. I've been using TT since it came out many many years ago. Best software program out there.
What's great about it: Finished my taxes in one day. All the questions they asked were easy to answer.
What's not so great: Wasn't entirely sure about the health care portion, but figured it out on line.
