60+ forms filed and done
on April 17, 2016
Posted by: Math99
Our return is fairly complex, with 2 states, rental property, and other less common features. Pre-filling many forms from last year's return is a life-saver. However, this makes the Easy Step Q&A confusing, so once past the first few questions, we switch to Forms, with last year's return as a constant reference. The context sensitive help continues to improve each year.
What's great about it: Pre-filling forms from last year's return is indispensable
What's not so great: Needed to pay for second state again to view 2014 return

Salesman's Business Deductions
on April 17, 2016
Posted by: SALESMANSam1
The process for entering deductions for a home office and mileage costs for using one's own car for company business was very poorly extracted by the questions/survey method utilized. Do you get a car allowance, do you get a mileage reimbursement , is it a part of your W2 income or is it separate? Etc.
On home office there's a similarly inadequate survey/explanation of how the cost of the office is being entered. Is there a deduction for a renter for the home office? How much of a salesman's income should be entered as the income deriving from the home office?
What's great about it: Excellent software, but not much help on business use of home and car expenses
What's not so great: No clear explanation of deductible expenses nor walk-through in correct detail.

NOT PLEASED WITH 2015 RELEASE
on April 17, 2016
Posted by: LIZnotpleased
I am finding this version frustrating. I didn't answer that we were taking a Traditional IRA deduction and there it was when I reviewed. How helpful. Wrong but helpful. Finding how to remove it wasn't simple. No where to key in phase to "Find'. Printing - wow. So many blank pages with worksheets and the data didn't print from the pdf. I have lots of Turbo Tax letterhead now. Used a lot of ink for no results. So, making it user friendly did just the opposite in case.
What's great about it: Easier if you have never used Turbo Tax.
What's not so great: Frustrating. Not as friendly as in the past releases.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Very Complete and Easy - again
on April 17, 2016

Not sure how long taxes would have taken without Turbotax, since I had a move from a state with income taxes, to a state without, and figuring out if sales tax vs. state income tax deduction should be taken. At the end, I was able to easily see if making a last minute IRA contribution would help or not. Also figured out the tax implications of our first child who just started college in 2015.
I wish the tax laws would be made simple, but at least TurboTax makes it as easy as possible for an impossibly complex tax code - even for someone like me that doesn't have complicated investments, etc.,
What's great about it: Helped ID charitable donations of clothing, part year residency calcs, if IRA contribution would help
What's not so great: None
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

I've used TurboTax for many years, but this year has been the easiest because most documents were importable. That makes for a very easy tax return.
What's great about it: Easy, Intuitive, quick
What's not so great: None I could think of.
