Some snags, but overall a good experience

TurboTax should allow the state refund to be a payment option.
What's great about it: Generally very straightforward
What's not so great: Help wasn't helpful for state returns. Paying with only the federal refund.

Errors

I would like the program to notify me before I leave the particular area (income, deductions etc.) if I have entered an error or omitted information instead of waiting until the end. Other than that, I'm good. I really dislike entering information for a K1 but that's my problem. Thought I'd share.

My First Time Solo

My first time using tax software and it was easy!
What's great about it: TurboTax was sooooooo EASY!! Just follow the prompts and answer the questions. If one can read one can use TurboTax!
What's not so great: It took more time than what I expected, but it was the first time for me, inputting information for two people.

a good product for complex tax situations

This is basically a really good product. It easily exceeds any help you might get from the walk-in tax preparation firms. Because you are doing the work over an extended time period you can check and double check your entries to make sure you get all of your legal deductions into the forms.
It does a great job of allocating your Schedule E and other deductions across forms when needed like placing a portion of your home mortgage interest into both Schedule E and Schedule A.
The only major complaint I have is a minor one in that it does not automatically cover an obscure deduction I can take against monies earned from oil well royalties. You also need to understand that if your taxes are fairly complex that you will have to switch between Easy Step and the actual Forms if you really want to validate the entries are being generated properly. This is not due to Turbo Tax bugs. It is instead due to the fact that as a personal filer you probably do not fully understand all of the tax laws and must be sure you are picking the correct answers.
What's great about it: one step processv covers almost all areas of concern
What's not so great: need to switch to forms to validate it does what you expect

TurboTax Newbie

I've never done my own taxes before and I was quite nervous. The program was clear and the instructions were very easy to follow. I would recommend the program to newbies like myself because of the simplicity of the software. I am also pleased that I got to keep the money I'd pay a professional preparer. I felt that the program helped me be more thorough than when I used a paid preparer because often they tend to zip through sections and I can't always keep up with what they're doing. I finally feel secure that I'm getting the best refund available to me this year.
What's great about it: Detailed but very clear instructions
