Thank you!

It seems that turbo tax gets better and easier each year of its use. I have the numbers and only have to enter them as the program walks me through each item to put in
What's great about it: just drop the numbers in
What's not so great: none

It is quick and easy. Reliable way to enter info and fill out all the forms. Can't understand how someone does this without being a CPA or running to the Library for tax papers more often than the grocery store.
The one thing that drives me crazy is the scenario where the program wants to check and see if I am eligible for something. Once I fill in all the info, it tells me I'm not, which is fine, but it could have easily figured that out with information it already had. If I don't qualify for something because my dad earns to much and I am a dependent, then don't run me through the scenario.
Overall, great program with a few hassles.
What's great about it: Easy and covers everything.
What's not so great: Runs me through scenarios I don't qualify for, but doesn't tell me that until after I done with the checking

Almost Perfect

Intuits seems to improve on TurboTax every year. Some areas I would like to see improved:
1. HSA Forms. - Yes, I was prompted for the 1099-SA form, but had to search to see what I do with the 5498-SA form. The data on this form is not entered into TurboTax.
2. Self-Directed IRA withdraw and roll-over within 60 days into IRS approved Gold/Silver Bullion and Gold/Silver Coins; stored within bank (trustee) safety deposit box. According to the IRS, rules this is legal. Need TurboTax to recognize this type of IRA movement of funds and update TurboTax help. May need bank to confirm the silver deposit and create the right 1099-R box 7 distribution code?
The Internal Revenue Code defines a “trustee” as a:
• Traditional bank (for example, your local Wells Fargo) or an insured credit union or another financial institution subject to regulation by state or federal bank regulators; or
• “Such other person who demonstrates to the satisfaction of the Secretary [of the U.S. Treasury] that the manner in which such other person will administer the [IRA] will be consistent with the requirements of this section.”
What's great about it: Improves every year
What's not so great: Need better separation of HSA forms 1099-SA vs. 5498-SA (not entered) and IRA rollover to IRS approved precious metals
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Easiest tax return made painful
on April 10, 2016

I've used TurboTax for many years to do my own rather complex income tax returns with satisfactory results. However, this year I also needed to do a tax return for my 19 year old son who only had worked a summer job and a few gigs as a musician and it was a royal pain. I started it online but the musician gigs resulted in some 1099-MISC forms which required an upgrade. So I transferred to return to the TurboTax Deluxe version that I had on my computer. Something got screwed up in the transfer and it showed an extra $2600 as "other income or loss" in the income summary. I was never able to find the source of this and ended up restarted the return to get it right.
What's great about it: Interview style makes income tax law manageble
What's not so great: Software bug made the simplest of income tax return a multi-hour ordeal
