Tax Return at Turbo Speed
on April 9, 2016
Posted by: ParkerRVA
Turbo Tax is a great product for those of us who are young and don't have a lot of complicated tax issues. I finished my entire taxes (federal + state) in about one hour. It was awesome, and now I can enjoy the rest of my weekend!
What's great about it: Simple interface and questions, pulled data from my last year's return to shorten input process
What's not so great: No opportunity to use refund to purchase an Amazon gift card

I was not informed of the extra costs of e-filing my taxes through Turbo tax until the end. In previous years there was no expense other than the cost of the software.
What's great about it: Convenience
What's not so great: extra costs

My 2016 Experience
on April 9, 2016

After many years of usage I go between forms and step by step frequently. Problems found: 1. Business income/expenses done with Sch C. At the end sch C-EZ is created. When saving to PDF with the "all records" option, sch C and it's supporting data is not included. 2. Sch A misc deduction worksheet. Line 12 (invest expenses) shows itself as "data source" and is not editable. I could neither find a way to enter information there with step-by-step. 3. Improvement suggestion: It would help having an option to enter numbers and mark them as "estimated - not final" and making sure to review them and approve them before filing.
What's great about it: Efficient, covered all my needed forms and schedules. The ability to download 1099's and more is great.
What's not so great: Some issues to fix see below
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Turbo Tax Helped Tremendously
on April 9, 2016

This is the 4th year I've used Turbo Tax. It has immediate access to files and access to detailed answers to any question I ever have. I would recommend this product to anyone interested in doing their taxes themselves!
What's great about it: The program found and loaded all the forms I needed.
What's not so great: I owed money this year, so no refund.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

TurboTax is intuitive but also guides you as needed. It made importing from last year's return super easy and fast and the whole process took WAY less time than I expected.
What's great about it: Step by step or as fast as I want to go
What's not so great: Trying to up-sell Audit Defense

Many Years using
on April 9, 2016

I've been using Turbo Tax going back to the Dos days. I'm always impressed with how easy it is to get taxes done and each year the improvements are great. The ability to switch between Step-by-Step is really helpful. The day I get my W-2's in I can go to that form and fill in the detail. I do it also with other 1099's, etc. Then I go back to the beginning and start the step by step. Most years there's a new category to deal with, e;g. the Affordable Healthcare Act. Some years I've had to deal with depreciation categories, business expenses and the like and found this program to be a great guide through the intricacies of the IRS rules.

Bittersweet two state results
on April 9, 2016

Most of completing the returns was very easy. No ambiguity as to normal questions. However, I found completing two states to be challenging in a couple of areas. Most important was retirement income. The program asked me to provide the time I lived in each state. Oregon apparently has a convoluted way in which to treat retirement income that was not understandable in what was returned by Turbo Tax. Also challenging was knowing how to enter interest income in each state (I had only a small amount, so I bit the bullet and paid tax on it in both states).
What's great about it: Questions for federal and Michigan returns were very straightforward and easy to answer.
What's not so great: Questions and consequences of answers when two state returns and retirement pension income were hard to understand.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved
