Not clear until after I manually entered two W-2s that I had options to download or use snapshot to enter data.
What's not so great: Confusion with W-2 transfer vs ability to auto populate

i always hated doing taxes and trying to figure what applied, what lines to fill in. etc...
turbo tax lets me know what info I need to enter, what deductions I can take. really makes doing my taxes sooo much easier. it used to take me about 5 hours to do my returns. now, it took about 1.5 hours.(part of that was retrieving information)
What's great about it: easy to understand
What's not so great: doing taxes in the first place

Trapped and upsold
on April 6, 2016

I have used Turbotax several times in the past. It used to be a great product, but has really gone down-hill over the last several years, over-priced and over-hyped, trying to squeeze as much $ out of the customer for features they need bundled in with many more features they don't.
Because of ACA and retirement related issues, I used the product again this year out of laziness and desire not to have to make a major change in accounting methods that I'm not currently in a good place to be making.
Product operates OK, there is even a so-called 'free' version, but you may be getting into more than what you asked for if your tax situation doesn't fit within the limitations of the package. Otherwise, you are trapped with most of your data entered and then required to purchase upgrade on the fly.
Features are OK, but product is over-priced for what it provides.
I do not have concerns about the quality of the calculations, but the features are no great shakes for the price paid. They would do well just to provide a plain package with basic features that fit the needs of most filers, without trying up-sell. It's annoying and insulting to your customer.
I may use the product again next year, but I'll try to find another that's a better fit for my needs.
What's great about it: Easy to Use as long as you fit in THEIR groove.
What's not so great: Not so good if you don't fit in THEIR groove. Harranged with attempts to being upsold from original product.

overall a solid product. always tricky to make sure mutual fund data is 'edited' correctly so it flows through to state program and correct income is generated. needed to call customer service 2x and in the end, question was answered/issue resolved, although each agent was not completely familiar with problem and we solved it together. 1st phone call related to prior year return not uploaded as .pdf instead of .tax was on computer, used online product.
What's great about it: transfer last years data, transfer mutual fund info, easy step interview
What's not so great: technical lingo sometimes couldn't comprehend, tricky to adjust state income from mutual fund

Overly time consuming and confusing

This was a complicated year, with a married couple living in one state but one of the couple has income in another. The online suggestions (from the Turbotax site) conflicted with the reality: they suggested making mock-federal returns using the CD software to produce married-filing-sep state returns. This did indeed seem to save us $1000, but in the end we just weren't sure enough of what it was doing to go with that. We ended up filing jointly in all states and got $0. Making the mock returns took many many hours and felt like a band-aid on the problem. I also felt nickel and dimed - I bought the CD, then had to add a state, then had to pay to file in both states.
What's great about it: Most of the questions were clear, much more so than the tax forms
What's not so great: If you have a complicated tax life, there are too many "work arounds" that make TurboTax harder than it should be
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Great product, great service

I can't imagine using another tax prep product or paying an accountant. I do have accounting/tax knowledge, but I trust TurboTax to lead me through the process. We have a somewhat complicated situation (installment sale of a commercial property) but the deluxe version works perfectly.
There was a state tax glitch and customer service did a perfect job helping me correct the problem.
What's great about it: easy to use, very good customer service
What's not so great: I had repeated problems signing on
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
