Pensions vs. 401K Distributions
on April 5, 2016
Posted by: NoMessWithJess
When entering 1099-R data, TurboTax seems to assume that all 1099-Rs reflect either IRAs or 401Ks. It tells you that if your are over 70.5 years old (which I am), then you must take a required distribution. This is true of IRAs and 401Ks, but not of pensions. TurboTax lets you continue without specifying a required distribution for a pension, but seems miffed that you are not doing that.
Conversely, later on TurboTax seems to assume that all 1099-Rs are now for pensions, continuing to confuse things. Everything ends up being OK, but it's like the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing (or has done).
So clear up this one little issue, which is not properly distinguishing IRA/401K distributions from pensions for 1099-R statements, and TurboTax will be improved.
What's great about it: Accepts and accurately records the data
What's not so great: Confuses these two types of payments

Generally ok, but Checkout time needs improvement
on April 5, 2016
Posted by: RobElmtree
Upon checkout when you schedule your payment, you are asked to actually "type" the date you want the withdraw to be made. Really?? There is no "calendar widget" (with the actual names of the months showing) to allow you to select the date in a nice convenient visual format? How about this - someone makes a mistake and types in 05/04/2016 - which is May 4, when they really wanted April 5? It could be a typo mistake, or someone could have been used to the European - day-month-year format. Please fix this, this is very simple and basic, and will avoid inadvertent mistakes. Thank you.
