I was not pleased with TURBO TAX this year. TURBO TAX did not import my W-2 information even though I used TURBO TAX last year.

Still some rooms to improve. More user friendly.
What's great about it: Guiding me step by step to finish the Income Tax report.
What's not so great: Some unclear "How to" instructions.

Bug in foreign tax credit calculation
on April 5, 2016
Posted by: AnonymousRev999
I am a foreign resident and filled form 1116 for the foreign tax credit. There is a bug in the smart worksheet for the form. The smart worksheet between lines 3d and 3e is supposed to calculate the Gross Income from all sources for Form 1116 line 3e. The calcuated value in my version of TurboTax was the foreign tax credit carryover from 2014 instead of gross income (the sum of domestic and foreign income). The credit carryover is calculated on the Form 1116 worksheet. I could not over-ride this value, so I adjusted it to the actual gross income by including an adjustment.
What's great about it: easy data entry, carry over of information from previous years
What's not so great: random bugs which can throw off calculations, as mentioned below.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Another Successful Tax Filing!
on April 5, 2016

Sold a house. Bought a house. Both experiences were mind-numbingly paper intensive. I was dreading the tax preparation process - and even considered using a tax "professional." But TurboTax Deluxe handled everything with ease, walking me through every income and deduction one step at a time. And the best part - seeing the refund rise as I entered my information... and knowing I wasn't going to be sharing it with a "professional!" Having the option of choosing between TurboTax Basic, Deluxe, Premier or Home & Business makes filing taxes yourself a breeze! And who has time to waste when the open road is calling?
What's great about it: Fast & Easy... Even with a home sale!
What's not so great: Nothing wrong here!
Pros: I moved

Good but Glitches
on April 5, 2016

Some annoying glitches wasted time and effort, such as having to uninstall and reinstall the program because it didn't give me the clear choice of where to save the program and files. Also, it took a while to learn that we didn't have to mark the box for "paid family leave" regarding the W-2 unless we received a 1099-G. (That form wasn't necessary as the time off was taken from accumulated sick time and vacation.) In addition, some of the questions at the top of the pages were unclear. I had to reread at times to ensure of answering "Yes" or "No" correctly, as the question and info on the page didn't always match well. Furthermore, I had to use the "Back" button repeatedly to ensure covering all necessary pages because the program went two pages instead of just one when I clicked "Continue." The program also asked if it could delete a couple of charities after I clicked "Done" for another charity. It also exited ItsDeductible repeatedly, returning to the list of charities, before I was done entering data Overall, though, this is still a good product. The Help clarifications I needed were generally very good, e.g., regarding child income and whether to file a separate return. I like that the program transfers personal information and other relevant data from the prior year's return, and that I can work independently on appropriate topics for my family's circumstances or be guided, if necessary. ItsDeductible has a fairly good selection of choices, in appropriate groupings, and though I did need to generate a number of custom items, I am glad that there is an option to do so! Finally, I appreciate that TurboTax computes the numbers, completes the necessary forms, and offers e-filing as well as status follow-up.
What's great about it: Relevant information transfers from prior year's return; I can choose topics or be guided; ItsDeductible; e-file; help
What's not so great: Glitches this year: skipped pages when click Continue; tried to delete charities; exited before done; unclear questions
