Another great experience - many years in a row
What's great about it: Handled Mutual Fund sales with direct download from broker
What's not so great: Keying in Int was challenging this year
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Federal 1040 -- one snag
on March 27, 2016

Using Deluxe --
Entering data for 1099-DIVs from my mutual funds --
Selected "edit" --
Form came up blank, had to type in fund name as well as $$ --
Saved this data, then had TWO entries, the old (no $$) and the new as just typed in --
Thus had to delete the old one --
Surely the old entry ought to have been edited rather than replaced -- software glitch.
= = = = =
For years, on my Dist Columbia state return, had to type in that my fed-tax-free bond fund was NOT tax-free in the DC state. There seems to be no place in Turbo Tax to indicate that this dividend is tax-free fed but not [entirely] tax free for state. See if this can be fixed for future.
What's not so great: Did not retain fund names for 1099-DIV entries

Very easy to use and fairly accurate. I have used Turbo Tax for at least 5 years running and never been disappointed or audited!!!
What's great about it: Ease of filing and detailed explanations for questions.
What's not so great: Froze up at least 3 times and had to reboot.

Missed Deduction

I've been a TurboTax user for years. This year I discovered an error in last year's (2014) taxes, which of course was disappointing. If medical expenses do not exceed 10% of AGI (which mine didn't last year), TurboTax won't include them, which is correct for the federal return. But I live in California where the limit is 7.5% for state income taxes. I only discovered this because this year (2015) my medical expenses exceeded 10% of my AGI so my TurboTax prepared state form correctly included the difference between 7.5% and 10% on the "other adjustments" line with a note saying "medical exp ded". This got me curious so I hunted and found the California 7.5% limit. One could say I should have known about this last year and figured out a way to force TurboTax to do the right thing but part of the reason for using TurboTax is for it to handle the intricacies of tax law. Perhaps TurboTax just needs to better integrate its federal and state programs. So I'm out a small 3 digit number in extra taxes paid to California unless I go through filing an amended return. At least for my 2014 taxes TurboTax did not find all possible deductions for me.
What's great about it: Trusted Turbo Tax for years, catches most deductions
What's not so great: Missed what should be an easy deduction

A long time user of TurboTax, 2015 is the first time I've had a problem requiring Hotline help. Online reviews indicated problems with Downloaded versions, so I opted for the CD for Mac. Easy installation. Easy entering new data and really like the comparison with last years numbers. But it wouldn't let me file because of a missing description in a Carryover Worksheet- State/Local ID, and a Medical Expenses Worksheet, Other. Spent several days of frustration, including Online help, to no avail! Finally called the Hotline. They were unable to co-share a Mac, but downloaded my file and quickly found the glitch. They were lines not applying to me, and skipped, but TurboTax entered a zero. Deleting the zero solved the problem. The Advisor deserves maximum accolades!
What's great about it: Deluxe is back after the 2014 upgrade fiasco. Reliable and easy to use.
What's not so great: Mac version had problems I couldn't solve; needed Hotline help!

Adding KY additions or subtractions (KY 740, Schedule M) is not well defined. Hours of searching in years past made it easier this time. The biggest complaint I have is that TurboTax literature suggested I use TurboTax Premier but searching through reviews and other internet sources led me to purchase Deluxe which worked just fine for me.
What's great about it: Fairly easy. Just answer the questions in the interview.
What's not so great: They push unnecessary upgrades. State not as user friendly (much shorter though) than federal.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

2015 Turbotax issue

I was frustrated with the HSA filing, because it does not handle qualified distributions correctly. I have to put these distributions into "Medical expense" in order for the accurate final result to calculate. The program should do that reconciliation automatically.
What's great about it: Easy accurate data entry, accurate calculation, highly visible screens
What's not so great: Glitch with HSA worksheet

I have used TT for several years and cannot think of a reason why I wouldn't do it this way in the future. My only quibble is that when out-of-state W2s are asked for, I was slightly confused by having to enter a federal ID when the W2 only applied to state taxes. Otherwise, fantastic!
What's great about it: Fast, cheaper than hiring someone
What's not so great: Slight confusion in W2s
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
