I had trouble logging on and three times it froze up while 'calculating'
While the customer service people were very good and very patient, the freeze ups were very frustrating and might have me looking at alternatives next year.
It took me twice as long to do my taxes this year compared to last year.

Gets easier every year!

Does the math for me. Pulls from previous filings so don't have to do anything but edit. The easy to understand explanations with additional references is fantastic. Loved the ability to ask other uses questions on line! The little audit meter gave me a happy feeling at the end! Will be using Turbo Tax again next year!
What's great about it: TT pulls all the information from previous filings. Loved the sidebars and drop downs like in the "Dummies" books

Why Contract it Out?

It's the best "out of the box" and easy-to-use tax preparation software. I've used it for the past several years and find that it gets easier each year. It's straightforward and doesn't assume you know anything about tax return preparation. The cost is reasonable as is the effort to use it. I appreciate the constant updating, which, rightly or wrongly, gives me a sense of confidence. Finally, I have never had an issue. Fingers crossed!
What's great about it: 1) Easy 2) Year-to-year consistency 3) Unlike mine, its memory works
What's not so great: Navigating can be a bit frustrating

Mostly Suggestions

Form 1099-INT allocates Accrued Interest among various types of income. This is just plain wrong!!! (I've been trying for years to get you to fix it!)
I had 13 sources of Tax Exempt income. There ought to be a worksheet to review to make sure I did it right.
ES Payment Vouchers should print out on 1 page, not 4.
What's great about it: Overall does pretty well
What's not so great: Handles Accrued Interest Wrong And 2 suggestions

Faster than previous years

I have been using for years, seemed faster some how. Did not like reentering data that should have been gleaned from my Credit union(mortgage data).
What's great about it: easier work through process
What's not so great: Getting to banking institutions for all needed data

For the most part, it was an easy process. I liked that the program walks you through it step by step and gives you information if you don't know what something means. However, for some reason, I got to a point where it was "calculating" for over 7 hours, but it really wasn't doing anything. I contacted a representative and they kindly and patiently walked me through the process of figuring out the problem. They stayed on the phone with me until the problem was resolved and then made sure I was able to completely submit the portion I trouble with, before ending the phone call. I call that excellent customer service!
What's great about it: Representative helped me through my hiccups
What's not so great: didn't know how to get over the "bumps"
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Gamblers not understood

This program has a reasonably good interface. However, if you have more than a couple of W2-Gs it makes you enter the exact same info over and over and over again for the casino. Also, if your W2-G does not have a locality printed on it, this program requires that you enter one before you can file. I was advised to enter XXX and fingers crossed that is OK. Would be better if program were better.
What's great about it: Walks one through everything
What's not so great: Does not understand gambling W2-G
