Software Not So Great This Time Around
on March 22, 2016
Posted by: scratty
I have used Turbo Tax for last 4 years with no problems. This year was different. I experienced problems generating updates once the software was installed. I finally had to tell the program to generate them later so I could continue to do my returns. Three sections of my return had to be placed on hold because the data needed wasn't available (because the updates were not generated yet). I went into HELP and tried one suggested method, but it did not work. I then read another suggestion which stated to manually run the updates. After this was done, I was then able to finish my returns. The Help center showed that there were numerous users experiencing the same issue. This makes me wonder if the software was tested for quality assurance prior to placing it on the retail market.
I don't think I'll be using this product next year.
What's great about it: Easy To Use
What's not so great: Tried to generate updates numerous times, but Updater FROZE using Windows 10 Had to generate updates manually.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Another Successful Year of Tax preparation

I have used TurboTax for the last seven years and each year TurboTax makes filing my taxes easier. In addition, I have saved money by being able to do my taxes myself.
What's great about it: I really liked the ease of specific questions being asked. No guessing as to the meaning og information needed.

I had to jump thru multiple hoops multiple times to get to the point where your program would take my credit card info so I could e-mail my taxes in. Then I could not print a copy of my taxes afterward like the program said I could. very frustrating.
What's not so great: much harder to pay for and finally send my taxes e-file

Turbo Tax is great. You collect all your documents, information and numbers. Turbo Tax will ask the questions. And, explain if necessary. You answer the questions. Program will review the numbers you enter & prompt you to look at any questionable answers. Saving, printing & filing - all simple.
What's great about it: Easy to understand questions

Still pretty good system

I have used Turbotax for many years. It used to be very simple. As a tax professional for thirty-eight years and now a retiree, I had to use a CPA for the first three years after I retired. Turbotax simply could not get the job done. Now that I have no itemized deductions it is easier. However, in 2015 I began receiving proceeds from an annuity. I had been receiving Social Security for four years and retirement from the State of Virginia during that time. My wife gets a small deduction for the cost of taking courses to renew her teaching license. I had a very hard time finding that. I ended up calling my CPA to help with the annuity.
What's great about it: Walked me through a very difficult return
What's not so great: Difficult to find certain items and insufficient guidance as to how much of a form was actually required.
