Not As Good As Last Year
on March 18, 2016
Posted by: Tankers2
I was doing good until I missed my estimated taxes - found where it was and after entering, it said "calculating" and would not stop. Computer was frozen up! So Ii spent at least 2 hours trying to get it unstuck and get back to the return to see if my entry had been done. Not good! Never had this before with Turbo Tax. You need to make the payment of estimated taxes a whole lot easier to find. Ditto with most other deductions.
What's great about it: The step-by-step instructions continue to be very helpful
What's not so great: Spent unnecessary time trying to get out of "calculating"

Turbo Tax Increasingly Ignoring Foreign Filers
on March 18, 2016
Posted by: CanadianEh
As a US Income Tax filer, I have been using Turbo-Tax since it was a MS-DOS program, and I E-Filed for the first time in 1999. Over the years the program has shown steady improvement in ease of use, and essentially eliminated any need for paper filing. Throughout that period I have regarded TTax as the only logical choice for complying with our income tax filing obligations. This ease of use was of benefit to us, even though we have been resident in Canada.
Until this year!
Sadly, it appears that Intuit has now decided that the number of non-resident US citizens who are TTax users and obligated to report their world-wide income to the IRS represent too small a fraction of their business to prioritize solutions for the issues that arise with such non-resident users.
The first indications come in the very first screen where TTax wants your name, address, etc so that they can "keep us up to date" with developments. Unfortunately, there is no way to enter a non-US address. Even if one's name and address are kludged into the city line in the address and telephone and email addresses provided, that information is discarded by TTax as one moves to the next screen or if the program is closed.
While that problem seems somewhat minor, it looms when IRS forms are involved.
The issues grow and frustration expands when one tries to report things such as foreign pension income. Foreign pension payers do not have valid federal payer ID numbers. Without such numbers, E-filing is not possible. This represents a substantial reduction in the value of the TTax to non-resident users.
Finally, if one does get to a point where e-filing is possible, the program asks for "state ID" such as a driver's license. Foreign residents #US citizens or not# don't have US driver's licenses.
Intuit needs to spend more time in looking at the issues for non-residents, and tweaking the program so that it does not stumble over seeming simple issues such as addresses and the lack of a payer ID, or the fact that foreign payers do not issue W-2's or 1099's.
The IRS has been much more aggressive about hounding so-called "accidental Americans" who have lived outside the US since childhood but have never had US income, or filed a Form 1040. In Canada, the IRS has even co-opted banks and the Canada Revenue Agency #IRS equivalent# and now requires them to report suspected US connections of residents in the country.
Those of us who wish to remain in compliance with the US tax laws #regardless of the nuisance of filing returns in two or more countries# are especially frustrated by lack of access to reliable information and software features in Turbo Tax that should make that compliance no more difficult than it is for US residents.
Parenthetically, the version of Turbo-Tax that Intuit provides for filing and paying Canadian income taxes is an abomination. It bears no resemblance to the US version in form or manner of use. Worse, there is no mechanism for transfer of relevant information between the US and Canadian forms. This seems to be a lost opportunity.
Another trend that seems to be developing is the difficulty in getting to actually talk to someone at Intuit. It turns out that it is possible, but the link to the necessary contact info is not obvious in the program. One has to stumble around the Intuit web site to get the necessary information.
Intuit seems to think that the "community" of TTax users is the ultimate authority in terms of answers to questions. It is not. One has no idea of the legitimacy of the "solutions" from random users. Questions need authentic answers from authorities on the subject of income taxes and the program is advertised as guaranteeing accuracy and ease of use. It falls short of this when glitches occur, and solutions are only available through on-line rumors that are often years old.
What's great about it: The expected ease of doing taxes yourself continues with simple step-by-step guidance that keeps you on track.
What's not so great: TTax (Intuit) is showing signs of lowered support for non-resident filers that risks their ability to e-file.

Glitchy this year
on March 18, 2016

Several times I had to Force Quit Turbotax on my mac. Each time I got a spinning beachball of death during some sort of "checking" procedure. Fortunately, I never had to go back and re-enter much info. In previous years I don't remember this happening.
What's not so great: Too many spinning beachballs of death!

Easy to use

THis was my first time ever using turbo tax and I have no accounting experience what so ever. I teach first grade. It was SUPER easy to use and walked you through everything step by step. I only got confused when I used the online format and I could not find an 8086 form and then it said I had to download it to my computer to get it. It took me awhile to figure that out but once I did, everything transferred over and again it was super easy!
What's great about it: walks you through everything step by step
What's not so great: started online but wish i would have downloaded right away
Pros: I bought or sold investments

TurboTax is designed for Average Joe!
on March 18, 2016
Posted by: Firrlgsizzle
I enjoy the convenience of doing my taxes here at home vs. going out to a tax preparer. The designers of TurboTax have done a very good job covering any area of concern for me. The help me highlights, and need more info/explanations are extremely helpful to aide in guiding a non-pro like myself through the tax report with minimal errors. Turbotax is a solid program; I'm not really interested in the competitors at this point!
What's great about it: I love the walk me through it features.
What's not so great: The constant prompts to upgrade for fee at certain sections.
